Good evening

Following 5 years of ruining my life and numerous failed attempts to quit, I must seek help.

My main problem in betting shop roulette machines, losing every penny in my pocket and then using my card until I cannot use anymore. I have gambled for roughly 5 years and I am currently in approximately 10k debt.

I have stopped for days, sometime weeks but as soon as I have a rough day I call in and bet my life away.

This needs to stop before I lose the few things I have left in life.

My family know but they cannot help

Any help is much appreciated

Hi Underdog,

My problems mirror yours. Roughly same amount of debt plus Roulette...

First and most important thing you can do is self exclude from the bookies that you use. Thankfully in my case im a few miles from my city centre and therefore i just self-excluded from mr fred establishment a short walk from where i live. It really makes a big difference to your mind-set. I actually havent been inside any bookies since 1 May. Thats the longest stint ive ever done. I doubt i would be able to do that on willpower alone.

So if your serious thats a good place to start.

Keep posting bud.

Mark

Thanks for the response

Today I will self exclude my self from every shop locally in an attempt to kick this.

I do however feel I need further help as I can't see light at the end of the tunnel. 4 weeks until payday and 30 pound left. This is no way it live.

Hi underdog,

Welcome to the forum, and well done for posting here.

You’ve made a brilliant move by taking the necessary steps in seeking help from here for your gambling addiction. It’s also good that you’re aware of your difficulty in attempting to stop by yourself.

What I’d like to make you aware of is that, gambling addiction is difficult to get rid off by yourself; you need professional help to overcome it. It also gets worse if you don’t do anything about it. It’s like a vicious cycle; the more you gamble, the more you lose, and the more you chase your losses, etc.

Having formed the habit over a period of 5years, it’ll take you sometime to get over it eventually. I hope it gives you some form of comfort to know that people do overcome their gambling addiction problems, and by observing our advice on strategies and boundaries, and sometime with counselling support as well, they are able to work through their difficulties . It’s doable, underdog, and you can also do it. You just have to be patient with yourself, and take your recovery process step by step.

It will be advisable to keep reading from our forum for more support an advice. You’ll also come to realise that you are not alone in this, and perhaps that will encourage you to keep trying.

Perhaps you may also like to contact us via our free phone Helpline on: 0808 8020 133, and speak to one of our specially trained advisers. An adviser would be able to refer you for 12 sessions of free counselling if you think that would help you to overcome your gambling addiction.

I wish you all the best in your effort to overcome your gambling addiction problem.

Thanks once again for your post, and please keep posting as often as you can.

Kind regards,

Beatrice
