Hello. I'm new this week after finding out my partner was still gambling last week. Very grateful for the support on here.

Hi and welcome. I was your partner 4 months ago. I came clean and asked for help. I did everything in my power to quit. My partner couldn’t get past the deception and we are no longer together, but that doesn’t mean it has to be that way for you. I’m proof (as are many others) that gamblers can change, but it takes a huge effort on there part. Can you get your partner on here? Can you take their full finances. Time for an open and honest discussion with them. Are they really committed to quitting? If the thought of losing you is not enough to make them quit then it may be time for some big decisions from you. Make sure you are financially safe. Gamblers are selfish and you will have to be too to make sure you are safe.

This can be beat, you can have a happy life together but it’s all down to your partner now. You can only help so much.

Stay strong 💪

Afternoon

Great that you have reached out to Gamcare for help. When you first find out it is shocking and cannot quite understand. Supported my son for 9 years through gambling harm. He was the only one to decide to stop gambling. Our relationship as mum and son was trashed for a time. Could not look at him in the face with the lies and deceit. My rock bottom was not his. Thankfully he is in recovery for 17 months and now we are back on track. I spoke to the helpine and had sessions with a therapist at Gamcare head office . Helped me so much as it is a lonely life. Do not enable your partner , protect yourself and as their illness is a selfish one.

Hope that you make the right decision for you in going forward.
