Hi all..... Just wondering if anyone has ever been down the route of gambling hypnotherapy to help stop? I've tried stopping numerous times, been to GA and all that but the urges just never leave! Any help appreciated

Hello n22cks

I'm bumping this thread so it goes back to the top to give it a chance for more people to see it. I hope you get some responses from someone who's tried it.

You say you've tried GA. Have you considered counselling? We offer free counselling both online and at local agencies throughout Britain. You can find out more here:

Best wishes

Hi n22cks, I had one session but as soon as the hypnotist told me he couldn't make me do anything I didn't want to do it seemed fairly pointless going back! I actually enjoyed the session which was exhausting & randomly did stop for a little bit afterwards but I obviously wasn't ready because I didn't even believe I really had a problem then! The next time I went looking for help, here I am in recovery! I thought hypnotherapy was an easy fix but you don't need to read too far to see there's no such thing! How long did you go to GA for & was it your choice? Plus what was the 'all that'? If you put sufficient blocks in place to make it extremely difficult to gamble, they should buy you enough time to ride out your urges but ultimately a complete change of mindset is required to arrest our addiction! Leaving doors open allows addiction to keep on festering in your mind! I think it's probably a viable form of therapy but if you're hoping for a magic cure, not so much!

Hi n22cks. I haven't tried hypnotherapy myself but as ODAAT says it sounds like a quick fix that most likely won't work. That's what us CG's are all about, the quick fix! Unfortunately there isn't one in recovery, it's a process and while we look towards the end goal of recovery it's the struggle to get there that makes us stronger.

I'd recommend giving GA a proper good go again

Hi guys, hope your well end thanks for your responses. I attended GA off my own back for maybe 4 weeks a good few years ago and from there I achieved a good 12 weeks gamble free! It was beneficial to me back then, as it wasn't as easy to impose blocks etc. I also needed it, as my vice was high stakes online poker and that can cause financial ruin!

When I say 'all that'.... By that I meant that I put odd blocks in place. My main block was to bar myself from the casino, and also I added admin rights to my PC so I was unable to gamble online.

I was better at controlling myself from then on, but now and again I take the odd big hit and it hurts! On the plus side I'm not in debt, but I just don't want the highs and lows anymore, as it affects me as a person too much!

I was clutching at straws with hypnosis, but just being on here is helping. I'm 4 days gamble free now and doing ok with it. I'll just keep on here and hope I keep strong

I don't touch poker at all anymore, my main problem is the bookies fobt's, so now I won't carry cash. I also have a prepaid Pockit card which I carry for my dinner money!

I'm wise to my issues and openly admit I have a problem, so with strong will and support I hope to make it
