I was wondering..... I smoke, drink and gamble! Am I, by definition, pre-disposed to ANY addiction hence my struggle to quit gambling or do I drink and smoke because of the hideous gambling? Chicken or egg? Any suggestions? Helen.
Hello Helen,
First of all welcome to the Forum. From what you are saying you have developed a few addictions and you are trying to understand what is behind your behaviour. There are many reasons why a person would develop an addiction, or more than one, and these are different for every individual. What is the same is the fact that once you have developed an addiction it is very difficult to overcome it without any support. If you are struggling to stop gambling it is not because you are weak but because the addiction has taken over and you need to learn new skills to overcome it.
We provide useful advice at GamCare and we can also refer you to face-to-face counselling, which is a free service. There is also useful information on gambling addiction on this website. Feel free to make use of the support there is available.
Best wishes,
Forumadmin
Thank you. It's very early days for me. I have never told anyone about my gambling addiction and would find it very difficult in a face to face or even voice situation. I am hoping this is my turning point, actually coming on to this site. I always thought I was the only one suffering like this....I am taking steps to turn my life around. I WANT peace and I WANT to be rid of all the anxiety. The thousands of pounds I've lost and the debts I've incurred - I have to forget that. I have to concentrate on building up some cash and paying off my debts. Thank you sincerely for this site - if I need to, I will call you. Helen.

I'm sure you could ask 10 people why they started gambling and you would get 10 different answers. I don't think there is one reason.
