I'm just curious about this and want other peoples thoughts/reactions.
How come I don't get an urge to do anything whether destructing or pleasureable. However I no longer want to gamble, I hate it and no longer want to gamble.
However I suddenly get this almighty adrenaline rush to gamble which blocks all negativity from gambling and fills it with only the goods which are illogical as there no longer is any. I'm struggling with the urge and i don't understand why i get it and i don't know how to control it.
Hello Mullen 103 and welcome to the Forum,
The fact that you are having strong urges to gamble, even though you’ve decided to stop, indicates you have developed an addiction to the adrenaline rush you experience when you gamble. Remember that this does not mean that your motivation is weak. It will not make a difference to understand how exactly that works but it will make a difference for you to learn how to manage those urges. There is not much you can do to stop them from occurring but there is a lot you can do to manage them and not give in. If you accept that the urges will come back even though you’ve decided to stop gambling you can be prepared to deal with them.
If you have a plan in place of things to do when you experience an urge you will find that when you can distract yourself for a while, the urge will go away if you simply wait long enough. Gradually the periods between urges will become increasingly longer.
We provide face-to-face counselling to help you build a recovery plan and understand your gambling behaviour better.
You may get in touch with an advisor and discuss how to get counselling, which is a free service. There are also group meeting run by Gamblers Anonymous that can help you stay motivated and focused on your recovery.
Best wishes,
Ana
