Hi all, hope you are all managing okay to keep away from gambling. I have been thinking for a long time that it doesn't help with the amount of new bookies springing up in the town where I live. Surely this can't be healthy and productive for small towns? Although I can see its very productive for the bookies. When I look round in the town centre its mainly charity shops, pawnbrokers and bookies / amusements. A bookies is right at the local corner shop near me too. I am pig sick of seeing them now and I'm going to complain to my MP about it. If we kick up a stink about them perhaps they would regulate their opening up new shops a bit more. People are in despair being tempted in by these members clubs and free tournaments, only to end up somewhere down the line begging and borrowing to feed their addiction and their kids. Hopefully we can make a difference before the big casinos start homing in on towns when our kids are older, as I would hate to see the next generation go through gambling problems.

Hi Joydivider yes it's totally true when I look round it's very depressing here too, everything seems to have gone back to the early 90's economically. I was volunteering at my local foodbank for a time as it took my mind off gambling urges, but as I wasn't free of the curse I was about ready for a food parcel myself so I stopped going. Things have got to change for me there is no two way about it or excuses this time. I now know how a miserable existence feels and I can't stand it any longer.

There was an article in the papers a couple of years ago saying you could tell the economic wealth of a town by the ratio of bookmakers to other shops on the high street, the poorer the locals, the more bookies. There was a high street in East London where one in three shops was a bookies. They know who wants to buy hope most.
