My gambling is a problem. Is there a concensus on advice as to whether stopping all together or controling and moderating gambling works best?

I'm sorry I don't have and I don't think anyone else has that answer.... What I will say is to gather as much information you can... It might not make sense immediately, but every little piece has a part to play over time in your Recovery.... On a more personal note, I started looking up and reading everything I could... Like Gambleaware... GA... I even attended some meetings and found other people with similar ways of thinking... Which gave me the confidence and info I still use today in my daily life... The answer is to be found after you have been on the quest and realised your potential is within yourself... All the Best... From Jim

Thank you Jim. I like the idea of the quest, to discover why I gamble, because I truely do not know. Am I greedy, lazy, stupid, overly suseptible to flashing lights? I think I need to stop being afraid of looking for answers within.

Do not get too deep too quickly...! Ease yourself into the right frame of mind and gradually things will take shape and your questions will answer themselves... Sometimes I look at the entire journey as a flow that takes its own course ... But you can make small gradual course or direction changes... Kind of like starting from the port of Dover and steering a ship to New York Harbour, if you think about the journey there must be a continuous checking of current position and making small changes to your course heading until you reach your final destination... And let us face it ... You are the only one that can decide when you have reached the Final Destination... All the Best... Jim

emosan, I think it depends on a lot of factors. Generally speaking, I would say giving it up completely is the way to go. I think that's especially true if you're into casion type games. The stakes can get high, things can spiral completely out of control, and trying to gamble moderately on such games are near impossible for gambling addicts.

If you're thing is sports betting, there is probably more scope for flexibility with regards to your options. I don't think it's impossible, in theory, to manage and control the addiction by certain methods, but again, I don't think it's recommended.

We're only ever one loss away from a complete meltdown/disaster.

I wish I knew why I gambled and how to stop or control it. I've never felt so low, and so alone, this addiction is killing me. If I hadn't my little boy I think I really would just end it all now. Don't mean to sound so melodramatic just at rock bottom at the moment.

I've had the meltdowns and many disasters, just about destroying everything and everybody.

I just want to stop, why isn't there a cure out there for this disease?

I've controlled my gambling by switching stake gambling money into a savings account

my normal daily bet £20/£40 stake

1.you need a passbook,so you can,put money straight to savings account at anytime

2.crazy--but I write daily bet i was going to do(still look at horses watch)(if bet does comes up its only a week or so till I catch up guarantteed return savings)

3.since I've stopped, comparing the two lists,I'm miles ahead in my savings account

4.im looking at channel4 racing today, but I've already put £25 in my saving account

5.its my way now controlling my gambling,an im up £600/£800 a month

6.betting £5,£10,£20,£40 a day adds up
