Hi,

I joined the forum last night and have been reading it ever since. I'm finding it really helpful already.

I'm just wondering though, my problem is with online slots, where I am anonymous. I can go to the races and have no interest in betting and even go to a casino for.a night out with my husband and be totally in control- cold hard cash is scarier than invisible e-money!

I don't want to give up doing these things as we enjoy them together. I actually spend.most of my time in the casino watching Dh bet! We've only been two or three times- there are no local.casinos that I know of so it's something we've done on a grown up, no kids weekend break.

I guess my question is whether anyone else only has a problem with one kind of gambling but is fine with others?

Thanks David,

I have luckily never bet more than my very small overdraft can cope with and I can't even.look at a bookies as I walk past as I feel so ashamed! I know I am in a much more fortunate position than many on here because I haven't caused any huge financial problems. My husband put filtering software on our laptop to stop me, but I have started using my mobile. Is there blocking software for Android?

Thanks

Oh, and I actually don't increase my stakes when I lose, just stick to the same.bets and plough good money after bad. I tend to do it when my children are in bed and Dh is working, so no chance of going anywhere unfortunately 🙁

Hi jha
There are some people who gamble just occasionally for fun and I guess that's fair enough. These people tend to also be able to take it or leave it. However it seems you are probably addicted at some level. Therefore, it should be avoided. Like anything else which harms you

This is a really good discussion. I wonder how many members on the GC site can have a couple of drinks and just be happy with that - I would guess most. However there are some people in our world who have one drink and can literally not stop until they fall over. Equally these 'problem drinkers' can probably pop a couple of pounds in a machine and it they lose walk away and not give it another thought, if they win be happy with the win and walk away whereas most on GC would pop a couple of pounds in, lose and keep going until, they have lost hundreds maybe thousands or if they win carry on trying to win more and more.

As cardhue rightly says, if you are in the group that cannot maintain control you have to keep away from that activity, in this case gambling.

It is very interesting how different forms of gambling switch different people on. In all the years I played the roulette machine I never once tried the slots, have never played card related games, couldn't tell one end of a horse from another (or dog) but was fascinated by a wheel spinning round. Others would find the wheel the most boring thing ever.

I guess people all gamble for different reasons to, some to try and win, some to escape the world and others through boredom and so on but the bottom line is if it's something you can't control and something that brings a level of difficulty to your life you mustn't do it.

Dave

I've had the same dilemma for many years,I struggle with roulette, weather that be in bookies or online or casino,it's destructive to me,but I go the races, and play poker with friends.and even put footy bets on,and seem to keep a level head, that's the social side of gambling that I really enjoy.but can I control it,or is gambling controlling me?
