A new week begins and I have ten working days remaining at work this year - I finish next Friday afternoon. My aim is to cycle to and from work every day thus saving £5 per day through not using the tube. Next Friday evening will be a milestone as I'll have reached 50 days gamble-free (fingers crossed) and will have saved £50 through cycling to and from work for each of the next ten days. I need to do my Christmas shopping soon but am waiting for payday on Friday. Here's to a gamble-free week!

I cycled to and from work today thus saving £5. I had a free work lunch today so scoffed sandwiches and a mince pie without paying a penny. I still have a free box of six mince pies on my desk to cover my lunches for six working days. I have a work Christmas lunch on Wednesday, for which I have set money aside. I am going to start my Christmas shopping at the weekend following payday on Friday.

It is my company's three-course Christmas lunch today, for which I've already paid a £10 deposit. I have £25 in my wallet and my bank balance is very depressing - chronically overdrawn as usual with hardly any funds available. I cannot afford to spend more than £25 on lunch so will have to go easy on any wine. I rather wish I'd called in sick today and not bothered with it at all. It is payday on Friday so that should ease the pain somewhat although I need to pay my credit card bill and National Insurance bill as soon as possible. I then need to buy some cheap-and-cheerful Christmas presents. All very depressing. At least if I stay gamble-free, next Christmas should be more enjoyable. Roll on 2012.

Six-hour Christmas lunch and drinking session completed. I did not use my bank card but, as expected, I've emptied my wallet so have nothing left for tomorrow or Friday. Still, at least I did not gamble and I have mince pies at work to last me the next two days. Two pies for lunch with a cup of tea is quite a reasonable meal albeit not very healthy.

I cycled to and from work today (I was well over the limit on the way home but couldn't afford the tube, the bus or a taxi). I have now saved fifteen quid this week by cycling. Going to plan some Christmas shopping now.

I am going to cap my spending on Christmas presents for my family and friends at £50, which is the amount of money I will have saved through cycling to work this week and next week. I will only give cards to a few people and will only use unused cards from last year. Wrapping paper will have to be used sparingly. I am going to stay with my parents from Christmas Day - New Year's Eve. I aim to spend no money whatsoever while I am with them. Next Christmas will be a more generous occasion. Roll on 2012.

I got through another day gamble-free and did not spend any money. I ate two mince pies for lunch with a glass of water and have two mince pies left for tomorrow lunchtime. I cycled to and from work and have now saved £20 this week through not using the tube. Tomorrow is payday so I will be on my guard as I shall have several hundred pounds available to spend in my account and I do not want to give any of it to the bookmakers. It is my money, not theirs.

You don't mention your family much, Pelle. Of course, it's none of my business since I am just words on a screen, but I'm a little curious, and since we're all sharing our lives and wearing our hearts on our sleeves, I wonder of you'd mind explaining how she could not notice that you're not eating etc. You must have lost weight if you're cycling and surviving on two mince pies a day! Can't you make a packed lunch? Do you eat like a horse at home?

BTW, isn't there a baby due soon? Ours is due Feb 15th!
