Hey mate, Just joined this site five minutes ago. So am just having a browse around so thought I'd start here

I know the feeling what your going through. I may of only just joined this site but am too familiar with the feeling of relapse. You say you started gambling again after a while off. The longest I went without going on a fobt was five months. I thought I had finally tackled my addiciton. I had not. I have been gambling for nearly 6 years now and have had some really bad times but the other day after blowing £500 on online roulette I finally got the motivation to quit once and for all. Thats why am here and I have also arranged face to face free counselling starting in two weeks time. (Something you should maybe look into mate)

Yeh it will be nice to be able to talk to other people with problem gambling. My girlfriend is very understanding but it's something i've never told my parents and my friends. Feel this site will help and hopefully my counselling. May I ask what you gamble on?

We have a lot in common then mate. On football the most I ever staked was £50 and when it lost i didn't chase but the roulette is scary. This happened the other day. Deposited £100, won £350 and thought about withdrawing. One more spin and then next thing I knew I deposited another £440 leaving me without a penny until the end of this month. I think I have come to the theory that big wins are worse than losing because you know you wont go "ow I have won £1000 am going to ban myself now and quit for good". You will never think like that so maybe us losing is a good thing because were both seeking the help we need to stop now. Am trying not be over confident because it's easy not gambling when you have no money and that will be the case until 31st may but hopefully I should have two sessions by that time and the football season is coming to a close soon and the football is the thing what drags me to the online sites.

Yeh I have been there. A few years ago one accumulator consited of an evening of last minute goals and nervy 1-0 scorelines but it came in £618 of a £9 bet. I was jumping for joy, I went to the bookies the next day to collect my winnings and as I went to leave I thought i'll put the £18 in the fobt. By the time I left I had put about £480 in the machine. The only reason I didnt throw it all in was because I had to go to work (which ironically, I used to work for w**********l, left nearly 2 years ago). The main thing what was running through my head was I nearly had several heart attacks waiting for the 90 minute clock to run out on the football matches to win the holy grail only to throw it away in about 15 minutes on a touch screen computer.

Yeh it will be one day at a time mate. What your biggest loss?

Mine was £1050 on a fobt. Even when I was £800 down and doing stupid spins knowing full well I wasn't going to get any of it back I still couldn't walk away with what I had left. My last bet was monday so the £540 I lost is still hurting but I feel by doing something about it is easing the pain. I take it you have self exlcuded from the online account now?

Hi Daniel, have been gambling free for 14 days now. I have been gambling for around 5 years and the pattern i seem to go through is having it under control for 6 months then losing a months wage in a weekend out of the blue, i have done it three times now in 2 years and i am hoping this time to stop for good.

Up until the first week of April this year i had stuck to £5 a week on footie in my local bookie. When i bet in shops i am fine, can stick to £5 and thats it, my problem is when i deposit online i just lose total track of what i am doing.

I deposited £10 online as i couldnt make it to my bookie, having lost that £10 i dont know why but i just cant let it go, i deposit another £10 then £20 and before i know it the deposits are £50 and £100, all for the sake of losing my initial £10. I dont think of the money online until its too late and i have lost over a grand in a few days.

What i have done differently for the first time since my £1200 loss a few weeks ago, i downloaded betfilter for £37 for 6 months and so far has helped a lot. I bet on my phone and find it too easy to gamble but having this app i cannot do anything and its made a big difference.

I was just flicking through the site after not being here for a week and thought i would share my story too, helps me remind myself of what not to do and helps others see they are not alone with this horrible addiction. I felt awful for the first few days after realising what i had wasted but i cant do anything about it now, i just see everyday i dont gamble as a day im winning.

Good luck

Hi CM

Thanks for sharing your story. I have the k9 protection installed on my imac. Also looking to get a block on my iphone.

It seems we are very similar with betting patterns. Today is only my 2nd day without a bet so not getting too excited but its a start.

ONE DAY AT A TIME

good luck mate!

Hi Peddie101

Glad to see you're feeling more positive than you were in your first post. This is just to let you know we've moved this thread to the recovery diaries section as it seems to be developing into an ongoing thread about your recovery.

Very best wishes for your recovery.
