Ok captain

I guess you have a problem with me, and that is fine. I have a problem with some of the things you post too.

However, I do not hold grudges, life is far too short, so I am holding out an olive branch here and I hope you take it.

I have very strong opinions and will continue to air them but please do not take it personally. I can accept that you want to continue betting, that is fine, it's your life after all, maybe you will succeed, I dont know but I even hope you do.

However most people on here cannot control their gambling and surely you can see that talking about odds and form etc can be destructive for a lot of people.

I remember how vunerable I was in the early days and if someone had suggested to me that there was a way I could carry on gambling I would have jumped at it and I would probably have lost my wife, children, house, job..maybe even my life.

I was seconds away from taking my life when I thought I had destroyed everything I hold dear to me. If I had gone any further down the gambling path I probable would have.

I am telling you this as I hope you will be able to see why I am so passionate about my opinions.

I dont expect you to follow my path as I would not follow yours. I fully realise that there are many many paths to living a good and happy life and I do not think that my way is the only way.

But I am passionate about what I believe and I will continue to be.

I hope we can draw a line under last night and both just get on with our jouneys, even if we may clash sometimes. I am sure that we will even find some common ground.

Anyway, as I said, this is an olive branch and I hope you can accept it...as for me, I wont dwell on it as I will continue to look forward , not backward.

All the best

Jim (last bet 22/04/06)

Day 29

I have some returns to collect today from yesterday. There will be racing on when I go in but I will ignore it.

I am a changed man. Maybe I will change my name to Random Free Captain. There continues to be Zero chance of me having a random bet.

Day 30 - frustrating and stressful day at work. Many problems encountered. Normally this would inevitably lead ro random gambling but I dont do that anymore.

I go out at lunchtime and for the first time in 4 weeks it is really heavy rain so just walking is not an option. Going in to the bookmakers is the easy option. I think that I could just go in and read the paper, not gamble. But I dont take the risk.

I go into the library, again. I am sick of going to the library but other than walking in pouring rain there is no option. I browse books that I have read, books I am not at all interested in, read the leaflets they have, it is all just passing the time. The only other option is wandering around a supermarket. Why cant I just go in to the bookmakers and read the paper ?

I have to come up with something else to do at lunchtime when the weather is bad but I have been trying to identify something for years. It is not just a matter of not doing random gambling, also just doing something more productive at lunchtime.

When its time to go home I could do with having a bet today, but I dont, I drive home feeling miserable and knowing that my work schedule tomorrow promises another difficult day.

Hello there C,

I can just imagine you trudging round in the rain looking for a purposeful lunch break....it won't be long until the weather improves C. Can't you read your newspaper in the library?

Day 30 without random gambling is some going...what with pressures at work, boredom at lunch time.....you are doing really well!

Hi Captain as has been said breaking long standing habbits and filling a void can be hard. But look at how many days you have gone and your resisting the urges to gamble in the way that is destructive for you. Think forward to the summer - and the options this can give you. Theres a bit world out there as we all know - somtimes its hard to find you place or where you fit in. But these things do have a way of coming right. Hope your ok - sending you good thoughts from an also d**n rainy n miserable Yorkshire. Blocked.

Evening Captain,

Is work that bad that you cannot just stay in the office at lunchtime? Or work through your lunch? Anything to avoid the temptation of the betting shop mate, which you are doing really well to avoid by the way. The bookies takings must be well down for the daily 121 from Steepledowns!

Do you live on your own Captain or have you got a wife/girlfriend/boyfriend? I would imagine it is much harder to avoid the pitfalls if much of your downtime is spent alone.

Anyway mate whatever you are doing it is working. Keep it up pal.

Thanks for your post Captain. I guess I`ve have learnt so much since gambling. Had some good and experienced teachers. Yes I do believe that there are different ways to quit this and would up hold that feeling. I know some that have done well and put it down to GA, others can`t stand the fellowship of the rooms.

The only thing that hacks me off is those that say that they want to quit, have good advice and support and then go on to gamble without even trying out those things.

I believe that those people are in a common state. That is the desire to quit ( based on time / financial loss, trouble at home and so on. On the other hand the desire to keep betting, the buzz, escapism or what ever. I truly believe that is the choice. It depends on which desire is greater as to that person quitting.
