So, what does one write on the first page of one's diary?

This book belongs to Julie...!

I am 35 years old from Edinburgh. I am in most respects an ordinary, educated, well functioning individual. I am also a compulsive gambler. For five years I have gambled in secret. I play slots, casino games, more slots and even more slots. When I start, win or lose, I cannot stop.

I stopped gambling on Thursday 4th September 2014.

As day four draws to a close, I realise weekends are going to be tough. I guess I need to find some new activities to keep me out of trouble. I have had real urges throughout the weekend and not sure I have been the greatest company but I will get better at being a non-gambler, I'm sure of it.

Thank you all for the posts. I will check out your diaries over the next few days. I was back at work today and it really helped to be busy. Any suggestions for non gambling activiyies to fill the void? All thoughts and comments welcome. Jx

If it makes you feel any better I'm 35 and well educated and for the life of me I cannot work the logic in me going into a bookies and betting my hard earned cash on the fobts on the outcome of a virtual horse or dog. I am not a simpleton - I know that over time there is no way that I can win on this yet I'm drawn to them when I feel down or bored etc. I'm fighting back at the minute and even tho everyday is a struggle I feel sure that I can get there and if I can then so can everyone of us .. Good luck and I'll follow your diary with interest!!

Thank you all. Started reading your diaries and, you know, it really does help to know so many otherwise well balanced individuals succumb to problem gambling. One of the lies I told myself was I am a rational person who must be in control. I wouldn't be stupid enough to let bookies and casinos get the better of me. It is not about being stupid. Some people can gamble socially or occasionally and others cannot. Recovery is about the realisation that I fall into the cannot category. Glsd to say another day done. Jx

So Day 8 is done and it feels great to have broken through the first week.

Thanks for the kind comments. It really helps to know so many others are in the same boat. Feels good to know I am not alone in this battle; hope anyone reading this takes strength and heart for my posts.

I've had a busy week working and checking out gyms in my area. I have read in several diaries that it is a good distraction and my week's savings from gambling will pay for a chunk of membership. Here's hoping...

Well done on the first week often the hardest many don't get past the first few days before giving back in again , take so much strength from that and keep putting into your recovery
