Hi everyone. Not sure if this is appropriate but will soon be deleted if not I guess.

Have seen so many brill, moving, funny and motivational poems and quotes in diaries that I thought it would be nice to have them all in one place.

Please feel free to add any of the above at any time.

Many thanks

Not sure if this one qualifies as I consider it more of a catchphrase than anything but I am very Partial to "Duncs stepping forward never back" thing he's got going on. Plus the fact it really seems to sum him up.

Seeing as I've a glass in my hand, I'm going to raise it to him.

Thought I'd get the ball rolling with that. Good idea though Rainbow.

re

i am honoured to be mentioned, thanks Bilko.

For me the most poignant words which mean so much to so many.

God grant me the serenity

to accept the things

i cannot change

courage to change

the things i can

and wisdom

to know the difference.

Duncs stepping forward never back

When life has dealt you an unfair hand

And you feel like you've really been cheated

Don't get irate, spit teeth and curse fate;

Stay calm, chill out, and be seated.

When the Devil's s**t in your laundry bin

And you feel you've been unfairly treated

Don't warble and bleat, stamping your feet;

Stay calm, chill out, and be seated.

When you've give it a try, and it's all gone awry

And you feel like you haven't competed

Don't ponder, regret, you'll just get upset;

Stay calm, chill out, and be seated.

When you've give it your all, and held yourself tall

And still wound up getting defeated

Don't let it show that you've taken a blow;

Stay calm, chill out, and be seated.

When you've gone in headlong, and done it all wrong

And now know you should have retreated

Don't sit and lament, over time poorly spent;

Stay calm, chill out, and be seated.

When you've leaped from a diving board into a pool

You mistakenly thought had been heated

Remember your strengths, and do a few lengths;

Stay calm, chill out, and be seated.

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something,

for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.

During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations,

because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge,

because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes.

They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary,

because it means you’ve made a difference.

It’s easy to be thankful for the good things.

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who

are also thankful for the setbacks.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.

Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,

and they can become your blessings.

This is a very important life lesson that a philosophy teacher taught his students.

The teacher cleared off his desk and placed on top of it a few items. One of the items was an empty mason jar. He proceeded to fill up the jar with golf balls until he could fit no more. He looked at the classroom and asked his students if they agree that the jar is full. Every student agreed that the jar was indeed full.

The teacher then picked up a box of small pebbles and poured them into the jar with the golf balls. The pebbles filled all of the openings in between the golf balls. He asked the students if the jar was full. Once again, they agreed.

Now the teacher picked up a bag of sand and poured it into the mason jar. The sand filled in all of the empty space left between the golf balls and pebbles. He asked the class again if the jar was full. The students agreed it was technically full.

Finally, the teacher pulled out two beers from under his desk and poured both of them into the jar filling the empty space between the sand. Now the students began to laugh wondering how far this was going.

The teacher waited until the laughter stopped. "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life," he started. "The golf balls represent the important things. Your family, children, health, friends, and passions. If everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles represent the other things in life that matter, such as your job, house and car. The sand---that is everything else. The small stuff. If you put the sand in first, there is no room for the pebbles or golf balls.

The same goes for life. If you spend all of your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are most important. Pay attention to the important things in your life.

Enjoy time with family. Go to dinner with your spouse. Play games with your kids. There will ALWAYS be time to clean the house or take yourself shopping.

Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. The rest is just sand. You are dismissed."

Before the students left, one shouted out. "You never mentioned what the beer represents!"

The professor smiled and said, "Well I'm glad you asked. The beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers with a friend."

Psychodrama

The doctor's certificate certified

that my brain was a splutjabbing mess

on account of a purple depression

brought on by my wire-wool stress.

Referred to a young psychologist,

a practitioner of psychodrama,

I was encouraged to re-enact events

that had pierced my mental armour.

It's strange how real role playing becomes,

how despair's dank well soon appears,

within minutes my voice began trembling,

my sight bleary-blurred through the tears.

I was invited to halt the enactment

until near enough to gather myself

the trembling detrembled, the blubbing deblubbed

a hankie mopped up the nose filth.

After what seemed an appropriate hiatus

I was invited to carry on

I "carried on" by damaging office furniture

before making good my escape with a yucca

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple

With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves

And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.

I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired

And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells

And run my stick along the public railings

And make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain

And pick flowers in other people's gardens

And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat

And eat three pounds of sausages at a go

Or only bread and pickle for a week

And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry

And pay our rent and not swear in the street

And set a good example for the children.

We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?

So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised

When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
