Today I am one year and one month free from gambling. Something I did every single day without fail, wasted lots of time and money on. My relationship is rebuilt with my partner, we are spending all the money I’d have wasted on the house, kids, holidays and making memories. I remember reading stories here on day one. No matter how bad the stories were or are, you must see that with the right support and determination you will succeed. I found the hardest time was Cheltenham festival week where I’d have been betting daily and going to the event with friends. I missed the event, the banter and the day out but I no longer miss the betting. I have no secrets no weights on my shoulders anymore which is great. I’ve become a better person, I dont argue with my other half anywhere near as much, or to the same levels as before. I would say downloading gamstop is essential to take the bookie in your pocket away, and treat bookies as an enemy instead of a friend. I now see the adverts that sucked me in in a different light. I can happily watch and enjoy sport but the outcome of the event doesn’t ruin or make my day (except the euro final!!!) the biggest issue for me was my job was and still is never going to propel me to a mansion and a Ferrari, however I’ve realised my family and I don’t need that. Throw away the quick wins, they’re fickle. Build a foundation and enjoy spending money you’ve earned and saved. Would also throw in that exercise is key. Whatever that may be. But great for fulfilment.
good luck everyone!!!
Congratz!
At the start it might feel like the daily hit of dopamine in short term is more fulfilling and obstaining seems impossible, but the longer abstinence goes on it feels like that is changing. Probably setting long term achievements in front of short term pleasures, frankly in almost all aspects of life seems easier the longer you do it, atleast it does for me.
Agree with the exercise part in all sorts of form it doesn't change your body overnight so it sets in a good mentality, other then release of Endorphins which is immediate.
Thanks for sharing your progress am9.
It sounds like your recovery actions have brought about some satisfying effects, including less stress, less conflict, and deeper fulfillment from spending your earned money on enjoyable family experiences.
Thanks too for sharing your experience that exercise has been helpful along the way.
Take care,
Adam.
