as a CG i am looking to appoint a lasting power of attorney to take control of my finances fully. i have tried to set up standing orders and arrange for my salary to be paid into other accounts for them to manage my finances however i always find a way of getting access to the money. This is a way of me trying to use the support from my partner and family and give her some assurance that i want things to be different. Has anyone ever tried this as some solicitors are asking for £275 + £82 for the registration of the form yet on line it looks as though for the registration of £82 it is a legally binding document. Any comments or suggestions from anyone who may have gone this route?
It's possible to apply on line if you don't want to incur legal fees but if a Solicitor is to advise you and organise it for you, do expect to pay for their services. In either event, it's only valid once registered and the registration fee is £82. The timescale is about three months.
It's not foolproof because there's nothing to stop you revoking it when the craving takes over. Also banks will want to know (as in signed forms) whether you have legal capacity to access your accounts or whether your Attorney is to have sole access because you lack legal capacity. The problem is that you probably don't lack capacity but ultimately it's a medical question. Finally, it's a big ask of an Attorney. The Attorney has to sign to say that he or she agrees to act. But what happens when this arrangement is set up and then you demand money for gambling?
Much as I love access to all accounts, I personally wouldn't take on being an Attorney for an addict, paid or unpaid. And I find that whilst my husband is committed to being gamble free, he cooperates with barriers and an LPA is not necessary.

There are many other things you can do to give your partner reassurance that you want things to change. Why don't you not have any accounts and have all the incomings, wages, outgoing coming from her account which she can monitor. Then she just gives you money as you need it in small amounts.
