Hi all. Back story… my partner of 3.5yrs has relapsed after being gamble free for 10 months. The last time this happened he was more distraught than I was… he handed over his finances & has been in such a good head space with it all. I was naive enough to think that was it. He asked if he could have control of his finances again and stupidly I allowed it and here we are. He’s always said the only thing that gets him is the a lot machines but last night he went to a casino & lost over £1000 of money we don’t have. We haven’t had a holiday this year due to finances being tight. Today I resent him and wonder what our future would look like but whilst he’s still willing to be honest about it (he called me straight after) and agree to hand over his finances again for good am I entitled to be hard on him?

any advice on how to handle the situation would be appreciated

Hello CAW89

Thanks for sharing this.

It sounds like you and your partner have been through a lot and you’re now questioning your future together after his recent relapse.

I imagine it is deeply disappointing for you to learn about the relapse when your partner was doing so well with your support. I can hear that, along with the financial loss, this has impacted you emotionally as well. It sounds like you’re able to be honest with each other and this is important when re-building trust between the two of you.

I know you’ve reached out on here to hear others’ experiences and advice but if you’d like to chat about all of this, and to find out about possible further support for you and your partner, you could talk to someone on our Helpline on 0808 8020 133 or through our 1:1 Livechat

I hope you’re able to continue using our forums for support.

Wishing you all the best,

Claire
