Hi, everyone my name is david, i am a compusive gambler and have been for 30 years, and im now going to try my best and beat this addiction before i lose my wife.

today i stole £400 from her that was for xmas gifts for the kids, i am disgusted with myself for doing this.

every week when i get paid i will gamble most if not all of my wages as well.

i am also in debt and have borrowed loads from my poor mother and never pay her back.

Hi Anders,

You've made the first step by posting on here.

Does your wife have any idea of your problems? It may be the time to have to confess to her otherwise you may end up borrowing more to replace the money and then losing that too!

its not easy, especially at this time of year but if you keep trying to hide things then it will only end up worse with your wife.

i told mine about 2 months ago and it was the best decision ever, it was hard, very hard but then it's been a great weight lifted since.

keep posting and stay strong

hi, thanks for the reply, yes i told her, she already knows i have a problem, but thats the first time i have stolen from her in the 6 years we have been together, she obviously isnt happy and has been in tears at her work today, i feel so bad but probably no where near as bad as she feels right no, so im hoping i can be strong willed and come out the other side of this.

That's a great step telling her. I agree it's awful knowing how much you hurt the ones you love with selfish actions. After seeing my wife in bits I knew anytime I felt tempted I would use that image of her face to keep me on the straight and narrow. It was truly heartbreaking seeing her and seeing what gambling had turned me into!

keep going buddy

Hi anders2809,

I can only imagine how low you are feeling now, my Mum did this to me & you saying it has just bought back a flashing image of the look on her face when she admitted it to me 🙁 Now it hurts that she was in such a bad place to have done that, then as a compulsive gambler myself I was just mad as hell that she had deprived me of a gamble!

Here's hoping that your wife is strong enough to stand by you & help you kickstart your recovery!

I am recovering after nearly 3 decades of destruction so I know for sure you can teach an old dog new tricks, that old dog just has to wanna learn them! Get reading & figure out what blocks you need to break the time-money-location triangle that enables this parasite to thrive on our misery.

Whatever the outcome tonight, this is now Day 1 for you...Welcome to recovery - ODAAT
