PayPal Negative Balance

Hi All,

I'm wondering if someone could shed some light for me.

I recently relapsed and gambled using PayPal. Now this is very recent and it does not show a negative balance on my PayPal account yet, but I have been reading that if the direct debits fail, then this is what happens.

My biggest concern is that I have no idea how I'm going to pay it back. I've read so many forums/threads about PayPal negative balance.

This isn't my only debt and I've been negotiating already with creditors to get into a plan to get the amounts repaid. I'm more worried and stressed over this PayPal debt.

Hs anyone had any experience of a PayPal negative balance and what they do to try and source the money back?

I'm not saying I'm unwilling to pay, even though really, I'm surprised they let me deposit that much even though I didn't have the funds.

I'm just really worried and scared of the repercussions.

Thanks

Hi @dja5184cis welcome to the GamCare Forum and thank your for sharing your concerns, you have taken a positive step in asking for help. If you feel able to I would suggest you contact PayPal to have a discussion and ask them what their process is for dealing with situations like this and see if you can make a repayment plan.

There are also debt management services you can approach as well as the Money Guidance Service I have attached a link to our Managing Your Money that provides information advice and contacts of agencies that can offer support Managing your money - GamCare.

I understand how stressful it may be for you currently and getting the answers to some or all of your questions is a good way to greatly reduce the stress and hopefully you will be able to agree an affordable repayment plan.

If you are feeling overwhelmed emotionally then do speak with your G.P. and also you can access further online support through our Online Community GamCare - The leading provider of support for anyone affected by problem gambling in Great Britain

Please do use the peer support services as they can strengthen you to remain positive and I wish you all the best for the future.

Hi,

Yes I have! It will be the same as any other debt, they’ll just keep asking you for the money back, say about selling the debt on etc etc. Call them and speak to someone, they will help you.

My debt through gambling was so huge that I had to go through StepChange, my PayPal balance is part of the Debt Management Plan now. It’s the smallest one of my debts (around £900)

Thanks for replying Claire, did you start with a large negative balance? Mine will be in the thousands and I'm panicking like mad. Also, I'm in debt with other creditors due to gambling which I've recently started notifying them of my problems.

I note you mentioned StepChange and a DMP. Did you find them good? Out of curiousity, how long have you been in a DMP? I don't mind about my credit score/defaults but I'm more bothered about CCJs etc. This would negatively impact my career/work and may even mean losing my job. Even with a DMP, I know it can be possible. Have you ever experienced this whilst being on a DMP?

Sorry for the questions, found myself up at night worrying about all of this.

Thanks
