He has phoned step change several times, who have applied for a breathing space and have put him in touch with money wellness. He is now in the process of applying for a debt relief order.

We have also looked at him personally going bankrupt. 

He was advised that probably wouldn't be accepted for bankruptcy and maybe not the DRO due to the type of debt and the fact that they may decide he took the money knowing he wouldn't complete the job.

If he is not accepted for any scheme, i fear we are left on our own to deal with it.

Going to the police will open a whole can of worms about why these people are after him, then potentially open him to fraud charges. I feel that he has deceived some of these people, by taking deposits i presume, knowing he will gamble it to get enough to pay more debts off. 

The threats are not just physical but including posting all over social media including as many family and friends as possible.

My wife's job could well be at risk if this was to happen, either as she may be thought of as unfit for her position as a manager in the career she has or her leaving her job through shame and embarrassment.

I honestly believe this is his low and is willing to work with anyone to end this but it looks like the only way to solve this is to pay the debts. In. the past we have used our money and run up loan and credit card debts, we simply can't get any more money, almost all our available wages are being spent on servicing existing debts from my son.
