That advert for the Navy is brilliant sonic boom, there is no way any gambling company would sanction a similar campaign showing our journey from fun to depravity. They wouldn't want the public to see just how much of a problem gambling has become!
Thanks for all the feedback on my update, the ads are clearly something we all share the same opinions on!
checking in day 51 gamble free.....
well done everyone for not gambling!!!!
cheers to that.
The eagle has the longest lifespan of a bird of prey...
halfway through its life it will fly upto the highest peak..
smash on a rock its old beak off to allow the new to peak through..
then use the new beak to rip off its worn talons and risk starvation
to wait and allow near 6 months for new talons to grow back...
so it fly off reborn in the remaining latter half of its life.
Phil,
Yes I know re; santion of advert...
BUT the bad betty campaigne is SUPPOSED to be an advert campaigne done by INDEPENDANT parties who's supposed aim is to raise awareness to the problem side of gambling.
Not sure if youve seen the ads?
Take a look online - if you ask me there a joke. They even got a FOBT into the commercial - makes me cynical as to how independant the company behind the ads really are....
Morning everyone. Checking in for the week 19 days gamble free. I'll be at 3 weeks on Thurs.
The adverts are very annoying not only to me but to my whole family. I also think that the "bad betty" one could have been done alot better.
Stay strong everyone and remember together we can do it.
Phil,
Please put me back to day zero. I will be day 1 tomorrow.
Long story which requires lots of detail but unsurprisingly I'm not in the mood for talking.
Didn't quite make the 50 days God d**n it and God d**n me and God d**n the gambling urge that is so powerful when other things in my life go out of my control and become negative... My answer.. Go to the bookies, I even had to wait 5 mins for them to open but I just needed to go in and forget and maybe get a positive buzz - 'positive buzz' the stinking irony of that remark :-/
Stay strong all and for pity's sake don't let that urge over ride you - I think rolling in broken bottles would feel better than how I do at the moment.
I went off track.. Life can be so difficult but why does my brain convince me gambling will make it better and that to feel better I must do it??!
Well in two words; man down.
Keep it tight troops and go forward
I'll catch up, currently a stretcher case.

We've all been there tick. You didn't carry on, you stopped and admitted your slip, not just to yourself but to all of us as well.
Tomorrow is another day and together we can do it. Stay strong xx
Wounded but not dead TFT,great courage to come back here and i'm sure you will back in the front ranks again soon.
re the adverts, yes there a pain in the ---- but it's something we all have to deal with and I can't see them going away.
Try and use them in reverse, every time I see one I use it to remind me of what a mess i've made of my life due to gambling and to strengthen my resolve to not go back there.
Won't work for everyone, but works for me Dino x
Checking in day 77 I think.
Just checking in on day 600, feels good reaching a nice round number! All has been well the past week and have kept very very busy which always helps! Going out tonight for a few drinks to celebrate as well as celebrate a work colleagues birthday! Wishing you all well!
Krishan
Early check in for me this week, still gambling free
Big well done to Krishan for 600 days today. Please can you find time at some point this week to let us know more about how you beat your problem and what has worked for you and helped you reach such an impressive tally!
TickFollowsTock, well done for being brave and doing the right thing mate! The easiest thing is to walk away, but you came back and posted which shows us all that deep down you want to beat this and have it in you to beat this. It took me a few slips last year to get to where I am now and I'm currently feeling in a better place than ever before. Focus on what it is that made you slip and putting stronger barriers up so it doesn't happen again. Keep your chin up pal!
sonic boom, I've seen all the ads and they are incredibly insulting, no bookies ever helped me or knocked back my bad bettys. Nor did they stop me gambling when I was angry or frustrated. The fobts are not designed for fun punters, they are designed to suck people in and bleed them dry. How on Earth can allowing someone a 100 pound spin be classed as fun?
Keep the check ins coming in troops!
Sorry to hear of your slip TFT but good you're back here, marching onwards and still plenty of time to make a massive difference to your life this year. One slip is not going to stop all the hard work and your understanding of the gambling addiction. You're fully armed and powerful to beat this and you have our support 🙂
Checking in on 55 days today, no massive urges. I still think of gambling and how I'd like to be able to do it but recovery to health and wealth is only possible through abstaining from all forms of gambling altogether. No bingo no scratch cards definitely no slots. I've accepted this is an all or nothing thing for me. I cannot stop when I gamble so I can never ever win. I must always remind myself and try to never get complacent.
Well done to all soldiers checking in this week on the challenge.
Boxingday1
Guys this might sound silly but do all bookies in uk have fobts in them. Reason I ask is I'm 99% sure there are not allowed in bookies here in Ireland (know been none in any bookies I've ever been in) why is it the irish government can help tackle this issue surrounding them while the uk turn a blind eye to them
Tickfollowstock don't let the slip up put you off would say most of us here have had a slip up some time during our recovery. Know you feel terrible after it happens but need to concentrate on the future. Figure out what was the trigger that made you decide to place the bets and try resolve that issue so it doesn't make you do same again and keep the chin up. This tine next week you can be 7 days gamble free, know you want to achieve in this journey as you came on here to admit your slip. Keep chin up 🙂
Ringer bell - Ireland took the decision to not allow these evil machines into book maker premises - good call.
The UK Labour government on the other hand relaxed gambling laws in the 90's and has in effect turned British high streets into a land of mini casinos. There was a time when you could walk past a bookmakers and you wouldn't even be able to tell what sort of establishment it is, where as nowadays it's impossible as every other shop is a betting premises and in certain parts (mainly poorer areas) and In effect these parasitic gambling companies have taken over the high streets. The shops are limited to 4 FOBT terminals per shop so they get round this by simply opening a new shop. You would think how are they doing this as surely the local council would intervene as they don't want a high street infested with these places, but a betting establishment is in the same classification as a bank (financial institution) so when another shop closes they can move in no question asked.
The simple answer now why doesn't the government just ban these things is they are too much of a cash cow tax earner. The gambling commission is self regulating and protects the bookmakers and most of the politicians are share holders in the betting companies anyway so don't want to see the demise of these things. Bookies make 75% of profits from FOBTs.
When the govt increased tax on the profits it had a flow on and some bookmakers had to close a raft of shops as a result. If the maximum stake can be reduced to £2 per spin no doubt you will see lots of these shops unprofitable and have to close. So there is things we can get involved in to petition for the changes to occur. I will post some of the links for those that are interested and want to do something positive which hopefully as a result will help others.
I myself would like nothing more than seeing these gambling companies suffer in the same way they have taken advantage of vunerable people for so long.
Woo hoo, think I'm hitting 50 days today.. Been quite easy so far, mind still raw from bad beats...
Affected by gambling?
