Hi everyone. I have completed 1 week gambling free but this has left me with mixed feelings. My family will be proud and happy to congratulate me but I just feel pretty numb. I do not want to discourage anyone on here because 1 week is an acheviement but I think my problem is I previously went 11 months gambling free and 1 week seems like nothing. Through this week I have had no urge to gamble and it has been easy. Too easy infact that I don't feel like I have achieved anything.

Hopefully I will feel a little more pride as time goes on.

Hi Scott,

I'm at the same stage as you are today. 1 week. I know it's not the longest time but it really is still an achievement. I've also found this week relatively easy (at least in terms of refraining from gambling). For me it is the emotional side that is harder to cope with.

11 months is great and you're now a week into achieving that (and longer) again.

I know what you mean about it feeling too easy - I've had that too this week, but for me I think that it's a case of simply knowing that this time it's for good and this time I really, really mean it. Maybe you're the same? Maybe this time you have the power and determination that you need. After all - you're not saying it's been the best week - just that you weren't tempted to gamble. Those numb feelings will start to ease and there will be challenges along the way but maybe congratulate yourself on the fact that you haven't even been tempted. Maybe that in itself if the attitude/mind shift that you needed to see this through.

Good luck and I hope the weekend goes well!

Hi stupidmistakes. Thanks for your comment. I think you have touched on a good point. It is also the emotional side that is really bothering me. I think this one is going to take a while to get over. But time I am sure will ease the pain.

1 week for you too. Well done. Let's see if we can kick this thing for good. I also really do not want to gamble again and am more determined than ever.

You have a great weekend too.

Hi Scott0803,

Thanks for your post, and well done for abstaining for 1 week even though you said you feel pretty numb about it.

Of course 11 months of gamble free period is a great achievement, and you did it, you still started from day one until you got to that stage.

Hopefully, your 1 week will turn into 2,3, 4 weeks, and then move on to months. That was how you arrived at the 11 month gamble free. One has to start somewhere, and you have started now.

I think it would be advisable to examine how you managed to abstain the first time, and apply the same strategies and more to help with your recovery.

Trying to overcome your gambling problem will always come with mixed feelings, and is not unusual that the first week felt rather easy. You can request for counselling support from us to help manage those feelings in case you need it. It’s important that you keep guard against any challenges that may arise, and to seek professional help and support where necessary.

Maybe, you’d like to contact our free phone Helpline on: 0808 8020 133, and chat with one of our advisers regarding other help options available that you might be able to access to help with your recovery.

Please contact us anytime between 8.00am to midnight, everyday. We’re open the same number of hours even during Christmas and New Year too.

You’re trying, and your efforts would be worth it, so keep going, Scott!

My best wishes to you in your journey to recovery, and please keep posting!

Kind regards,

Beatrice

Hi Beatrice. Thanks for your support. I have contacted the number who referred me onto a partner. This partner called me on Thursday and said they didn't work in my area but would find someone who did. I am now just waiting on a phone call and will hopefully get the help and support I need.

Thanks again

Hi Scott,

I think that the emotional side must be the hardest for most people. Money issues can be resolved over time, but the emotional side is unlikely to sort itself out without some sort of “help”.

I’ve started counselling and although it’s obviously really early days for me, I am finding it really helpful – both in terms of what I’m learning but also in terms of feeling like I am doing something about it.

I’m feeling more determined than ever too and I’m pleased to have the weekend out of the way without any urge to gamble.

I hope you’re still going strong!
