Hi new to the forum, 3 days gamble free, in all honesty probably because i dont have a penny to my name, my question is why do we do this crappy activity? i know that it is self destructive, i know that i will most certainly lose because when i win i may walk away when i have a profit and the profit has had to be higher as my gambling has progressed for me to walk away, like £**-£**, then i go back the next day and suprise suprise lose it all, if i initially lose i always chase the losses nd of course...i lose everything. i recently was in a terrible vicious circle of being paid one months wage possible £** then either that night after work or the next day losing the lot, all bill money rent money everything!!!!, ive maxed out cards, had pay day loans, got to a stage where any loan i apply for is instantly rejected because my credit score is so low, possibly £** of debt, i lay in bed atnight and think what the **** have you done!!!!!, i feel i really must have some real unknown unresolved issue to do such a irrational terrible thing, over and over again, of course i go through the same rigmaroll of i wont do it again, im finished, im done, but as black is black come payday i find my self on a FOBT or driving to a casino heart pounding mind racing like a posessed man!!! sorry for the rant but im just interested as to peoples thought as to why they gamble and do such extream irrational behavour???

For me, I have a long history of depression. I knew that even though i would probably lose, I would also feel ok for a few hours. Gambling took me out of my low moods, boredom. It's a self-destructive coping strategy that has no place in my life anymore. Gambling is basic as dumb as you get. In our defence though the gambling industry is designed by highly intelligent people to give you the illusion that you could win, and thus we come back again and again. They say a fool and his money is easily parted. So true for me.

When you gamble you always get a teaser that believes you into thinking your 'roll', 'spin' or 'time' is coming.

As canterbury100 says above, the gambling industry knows what it is doing to draw you in. You'll often get these wins or near big wins that keep you going. But it's never enough compared to what you've chucked in. So you keep going. Sometimes (very rarely) the big win does come in and you have this major high and feeling of relief. But then another part of your mentality kicks in, 'What if I'd bet bigger than that stake?'....'What if I'm on a roll here?'.....So what do you do? You go in again. Sometimes you do get another decent win. More often than not though, you lose it all. Because what happens? You feel annoyed at yourself for losing your winnings from earlier and then try to get to that same amount. You think it still must be in the machine, or whatever. 'If it gave it to me before, it'll give it again'.....

In my opinion, this is the most dirty business in the world. Gambling is a disgusting and vile industry that is sickening me more day by day. We should not give another penny to these businessmen lacking in morals who prey on the poor and vulnerable, who try gambling to improve their pathetic financial situations, only to make it even worse.

Of course, I'm not saying the gambler is completely blameless. But people preying on them should feel even more ashamed of themselves. Look at how bad things have got now it's moved to online gambling, where it's more easier than ever at a click of a button to transfer money from your bank account, to click a bet through on your phone. It's dangerous, to the point where we've got all this help for gambling now and the government looking to reduce the maximum stake.

I once met an older compulsive gambler who never had access to mobile phone betting or anything online and he said he'd almost lost everything without all that, but with the online gambling he'd definitely have topped himself.

It just makes you think. This day and age is so much worse and the gambling companies have been allowed to get away with it. The amount of adverts there are, on the TV, on the internet, on the high street. Everywhere you go.

Why are we making the rich get richer? Just think about that and be disgusted next time you're about to part with another penny of your money. It's really beginning to make me feel sick to my stomach that I've contributed towards someone's Ferrari or Lambourghini or to pay off their mansion, when I could have had my own if I'd just saved it. Instead, I gave in to someone who already had money and designed a website and some games that drew people in, made a fool of them, and encouraged them to part with their money looking for that big win that happens once in a blue moon.

Enough is enough. I'm banning myself now with GamStop and I will never, ever be going into one of those dirty betting shops or Casinos ever again. It should be illegal.
