A major relapse, lost £1500 in 24 hours. Was well in track to having enough saved to go travelling come then end of the year, now i feel like someone has literally emptied my bank account and its left me feeling so low. Im really frustrated, i had won £250 which i built up gradually which i used for atrip to the sea side and round of golf, cinema etc so i could enjoy them even more as technically they were free. When will i learn that gambling isnt a money earner. Would love some words of advice and any tips?!

I cant keep going on like this, doing lots of overtime to earn money to just blow it in a frenzy time and time again. My university life was ruined because of it.

Help please!

Hi derby lad, well done for coming on here and talking about it, im guessing winning the £250 and using it to enjoy yourself made you think you could do it again and hence the big loss, the only thing i can recommend is either banning youself from the bookies or online betting so the temptation isnt there, i keep saying to myself take away the option and it starts solving the problem, also try talking to netline on here see what they can advise you if you feel you need serious help like counselling.

All the best

Hi Derbylad,

You're absolutely right in thinking that gambling isn't a way to earn money. The more you can accept that thought, the better off you'll be in the long run, and gambling won't seem as appealing. Gambling is only a way to lose money in the long run, and the way to win at it is not to play.

Have you thought about downloading any blocking software? In some of your previous posts you mention internet gambling, and Betfilter and Gamblock are two really good programs for protection yourself online. Those might help you put a barrier between you and gambling.

Beyond that, what about getting individual counselling? That could really help you work on ways to manage your urges better, and maybe address any underlying reasons for your gambling. Counselling helps a lot of people to get their lives back on track, so that might be something to look into. We've got partner agencies in many parts of the country that provide that at no cost, and we'd be happy to tell you more about it if you wanted to get in touch.

If any of this sounds like something you'd like to chat with us further about, feel free to call our Helpline (0808 8020 133) or connect via the Netline from 8am to midnight every day.

Hope this helps,

Travis

Hi Derbylad - I once read that the worst thing that can happen to a gambling addict was winning! Thereafter the cycle begins and almost always ends in tears!! Similar thing happened to be about a month ago. I had lost a few thousand this year and planned to recover it all. Started well, then ended £5k down on the year to date - a massive impact on my/my family's finances. Since had to take a loan to bridge the shortfall. Not good.

A month or so down the line I feel very strong about not gambling and the thought of it is actually makes me feel a bit sick to be honest.

Everyone has to find their own way. I would suggest starting an online diary on the site and report in every day. Reading them, you can see the massive support that this forum gives.

Mate I've relapsed so many times. I've realised that every time I do I generally hit roulette harder than I would normally. I guess that just confirms my addictive behaviour. One thing is for certain we never win be it short term or long term. The bookie or the online casino wins ALL our money back and more. I'm tired of feeling depressed all the time. I don't want to feel like this anymore but the only person who can stop this is you and I.
