Hi all.

I managed around 14 months without gambling a single penny from 1st January 2015 until the end of February 2016. Since then however I have slipped back into my old bad habits. Why? Purely and simply because I have a compulsion to gamble which I cannot control once I give into it. For me that first bet is the killer. Discipline goes out of the window. Back to square one.

When I am thinking rationally I know that there are no upsides to gambling. I don't even get a buzz out of it anymore. There are literally no positives. Too many negatives to mention though!

I don't gamble online. Long since self-excluded from all of the bookmaking sites. I've got a joint account with Mrs C also and therefore I would never deposit into a gambling account. I do all my gambling in the bookies. Horrible places! I suppose I should just self-exclude but I want to do things on my own terms.

My challenge to myself is to go 1000 days without entering a betting shop. 400 or so days hasn't proven enough previously but maybe 1000 might. Besides anything else I like a challenge!

I feel positive writing this. I know from experience that the first 20 days or so will be hardest. I also know from experience that I can do this.

Well done Curly my old friend. Hope you are well and the golf handicap is decent?! I'll take you up on your offer of matching each other for no gambling

Cheers for the post Steve.

Thanks for taking me up on my offer of matching each other day for day in recovery. I stupidly had a single bet on the way home from the golf course yesterday after having racked up a few days without a bet. Now that you have got my back pal, I'll not do that again. I'm going to post every day for the next 20 days in an effort to break the cycle. I will do this.

Day 1.

Hi Curly, I've set myself similar goals to yours this morning. I'm on Day 0. I'm determined to live a happier, healthier, more relaxed life than I am currently doing at the moment. Why gamble when you can't win? That's what I keep telling myself? It's ridiculous really! But we still do it!

I've had enough. I want to win again... in life!

It's given me a few highs, yes, but it's also given me a heck of a lot of lows. Self inflicted lows!

Why do that to ourselves. It's just not worth it.

For every successful day I've had gambling, I've had 6 days of pure misery! Losing!

Let's change buddy! Good luck!...

Cheers Steve.

Yes all is good thanks. No gambling last 2 days so today is now day 3. I'd probably have had a bet on the golf on Sunday morning under normal circumstances. Drawn £50 out from the cash machine or something similar. Intention of putting £30 on a golfer and maybe having £20 on a dog whilst in the bookies. Usually ends with blowing £50 and not even managing to place the golf bet. That's about 'normal' for me.

2 days down, 998 to go!

I know the feeling Curly it's easy to just say ah it doesn't matter it's only ВЈ50 but then those £50's add up and by the time you've had a reality check you could've bought yourself a brand new set of clubs, booked in for a round at St Andrews and paid Tiger Woods to carry your clubs (I wouldn't trust him driving the buggy!). You get my point though, there's so many good things you can do with the cash but we chose to waste it and get in that negative cycle of chasing. I say sod that lets get positive, let's say goodbye for good to this awful mentality and lets start living a happier life.

Here's to day 4

Stay strong

Steve

Curly my old pal, I dropped by the other day and saw that you were back on. It just shows how tough this addiction is to beat. You know what you need to do, so just do it. As you may have seen, I get urges every so often. Usually if I've had a beer and then I'm on my own with work (away from the family). The longer you go the easier it gets to bat them away. Create those barriers mentally. Just start again. Get that penny to drop. Take care big man, Russ

Thanks for the posts Steve and Russ. Always great to hear from you guys.

Well today will be day 6 without a bet. No hiccups this week. I'm confident of getting through this weekend and then continuing to rack up the days and weeks thereafter.

It's not all doom and gloom for me. My gambling over the last 15 months has been nowhere near as destructive as it was when I first signed up here in 2009! Wow, how time flies! I know however that I need to stop completely if I am ever going to have a chance of being content with myself. I've wasted far too much time and money in my life on gambling. I can't allow that to continue.

Busy day ahead so that's all for now. Here's to a great gamble-free weekend.

Well the weekend passed without incident. Posting on here really helps. I'd definitely have repeated the quick £30 or so on the way back from golf, as per previous weekend, otherwise.

I believe it was the 'Derby' on Saturday. I used to take a proper interest in racing. I've not done now for years. I honestly could not name a single horse that ran in the race. When I've gone in the bookies over the last 15 months it has been purely and simply to gamble. I rarely even look at the form. Just pick a horse or dog from the screens, doesn't matter if real or cartoon, and then throw down my hard-earned. What a wally!!

No more, no more, no more!

I'm 16 days now without a bet. I had plenty of opportunity to gamble at the weekend had I chosen to. I chose not to. If I keep making the right choices then I'll be ok.

Today is day 17. My addiction is nowhere near as strong as it was 10 years ago. Back then I could hardly fathom the thought of going a single day without a bet. Nowadays I can genuinely take it or leave it. The habit is now broken, if I fill my spare time with more rewarding pursuits then I'll be fine!

I've done more than 20 days without a bet now. From past experience I know that I now have the opportunity to continue this indefinitely.

I've got to be honest though, I'm thoroughly miserable. I do get spells like this from time to time, when gambling or when not gambling, so I don't think it is anything to do with missing the buzz. Hopefully I'll perk up a bit soon.

I hope everyone has a great gamble-free weekend.
