I have been gambling since i was 17 and now lifetime i am down roughly 75k.
I am 60k in debt
30k in loans
another
30k to friends and family.
This past suberbowl is the last time i am gonna gamble.
luckily i have a job but it only pays me 45k before tax. I work another part time that nets me prob another 20k before tax. Do you guys think I will be stuck in debt forever?
I will keep track of how much I make from my third job and attribute that solely to paying back my debt. I will work 7 days a week for the foreseeable future as I deserve this for being such an irresponsible gambler during my college years.
Hi junglecat, sounds like you're committed and definitely a worker, you're focus on work will help you get debt free, to get gamble free you will have to work on yourself, question why you gamble? The money is irrelevant, you will lose 100% of any spare money you earn.
I've come to the conclusion boredom, escapism are my two reasons, my release in gambling has taken my money and more importantly my time, time I could of been pursuing new interests, jobs, spending time with family and friends. Ironically, if I would pursued other interests, careers etc I wouldn't of had become bored and dreamt of what could of been.
You're 23, life has just began, use this experience to make you stronger, gambling is designed for you to lose, you will never win.
All the best
Rob
@reality-rob I wish I had realized this a lot earlier. But yes I have now learned that gambles never win long-term. I will take this as a very expensive lesson and I will hope to keep the mental fortitude to keep myself away from the temptations of gambling. I like you to know for certain that the reason I gamble is boredom since I hate to be bored. I know if I keep myself occupied by just working I won't even have time to gamble so right now I am just trying to pack my schedule with work. What did you do instead of gambling when you decided to quit?
Today is gonna be day 2 without gambling.
Well done jc, keeping busy is certainly the key. Planning ahead helps, I've often struggled when I've spare time, my reward for the hard work would be a little gamble, which would end up in disaster.
I've 2 kids, I manage a business, any spare time I try to fill with little odd jobs when the weather is good, I play guitar. I'm trying my best to keep busy at weekends, that's when I find things hardest, I'm conscious of this now, Saturday in front of the TV is definitely being avoided.
Keep up the good work jc.
Thanks rob I am gonna stay active on this forum and record myself daily.
I really hope working these 3 jobs will help me pay off these debts faster as that is the only thing on my mind right now. I have told my self no more gambling until all the debts are paid off which is not going to be for a very long time.
will u ever pay off what u owe? which is roughly a years salary? id say you can do it very quickly mate.......
When i started on here i set up a spreadsheet analysing all my income and analysing expenditure..... each year i got better.... be accountable.... good luck
@adam123 Hey adam I really hope so I went in for my job interview for my third job yesterday and I got the job. I start today, so after I work my 9-6 I'm going to work another 2 hours for like 4 days a week. On weekends I work my second job. Only day off is sunday
I am currently on day 4 of not gambling.
I have added up all of my current debt including car loans and student loans and it totals up to around 60k.
I think Im finally seeing a sliver of light of hope at the end of this very dark tunnel. I currently work 3 jobs and work every day except Sunday. I want to stay as positive as I can while I try to tackle this debt and more importantly this gambling addiction that has taunted me for years.
@g5q04a3jze I’m 24 and in a similar position, I don’t owe that much however I have racked up the debt. It’s very difficult as you always want that one win which will fix everything but it will never come. I’m day 3 in to no gambling now and hoping to carry it as long as possible. If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of gambling did you do? Mine was online roulette
@njvsh63cip Mine was sports betting (majority 50%) poker 30% Baccarat 20% of my losses. If you don't mind asking what is your debt total look like and how much do you make from your job in comparison? And don't worry we got this, just got to take it day by day and stay disciplined.
@g5q04a3jze I owe 5k which is tiny compared to yourself but affected me massively. I earn 23k recently risen to 25k, I’ll have the debt paid off with 18-24 months but it’s the feeling of being in that situation in the first place. It was only when my dad discovered the situation I was in that I had to come clean, I’m going to my first meeting next week so hopefully that can be the start of something.
Affected by gambling?
