I spent last night reading through all the stories on here. Though I wouldn't wish my thoughts and problems on anyone, it was a comfort to feel that I wasn't alone.
I've amassed an amount of debt recently through another bad patch of gambling, it's not an insurmountable amount. The hardest part I find about giving up the habit is the thought that even with good behaviour I will still be paying for my mistakes in 10 or 12 months time. I can hardly go a week without a bet and can put myself back months in the space of a weak couple of hours!
I've finally convinced myself I cannot gamble my way out of this hole, I've known this for a while but chose to ignore it.
Today Saturday 3rd May is day one...
Hi James - First of all, well done on admitting your problem and for joining this site - probably the best thing you could have done.
You mention that the hardest part is facing debt for the next 10 or 12 months - be thankful that you have seen the light now before you become saddled with many years of debt and financial misery. Now is your chance to start a new life, gamble-free. I don't know what your particular method of gambling is, but try to put barriers in place, e.g. self-exclusion, online blocking software.
These actions will help a lot in stopping the temptation to lose any more money.
Finally, I see you have been reading other people's stories - there is an immense amount of wisdom here, as well as encouragement and inspiration, so please try to visit as much possible.
Best wishes for your journey.
Joanna
