Hello Positive Action

You seem to be looking for feedback on a letter you wish to send to an MP. Political activism isn't appropriate on the GamCare Forum but we welcome debate on issues relating to problem gambling so we've amended the title slightly to reframe as a debate.

The issue of whether gambling venues should be required to offer membership is a very important one. It would be interesting to know if any of you have gambled in venues which did require membership. Did that feel like a safer environment because you had to register in order to gamble? Was there anything offputting about it?

Best wishes

Yes it should require a membership scheme because the relationship between gambler and "industry" should be formalised as much as possible. Limits needs to be set and figures published by the operators to show they are operating under any rules in place

At the moment its far too casual and the gamblers dont understand the odds in most cases. Trouble is that like me we ignored the odds for a fix so I dont know what the answer is short of banning them. Machines if not banned need a sign on them saying your odds of getting this are 1.1000 or whatever...your odds of getting a couple of quid are 1.10 or whatever. We stood at those machines where we would probably not have gambled for the same odds with a ball under a cup. I think the machines are deceptive, delusional boxes of harm. I dont think any gambling should be on the high street.

Its not going to happen anytime soon but the deregulation must be reversed in my opinion. I could blow a lot of hot air about setting limits and protecting gamblers from themselves but it would have happened a long time ago if it was going to happen.

Its a difficult one in that Im not sure what would have really helped me. A strict session limit may have helped. A duty to register and monitor me could have helped but that is against the interests of the gambling dens and the government tax on gambling revenue

Cigarettes were once advertised as a cool activity so gambling has to be regulated right back as the harmful and dangerously risky activity that it is

Best wishes to everyone on the forum
