Hello everyone, as soon as I turned 18 I started gambling and it very quickly became a problem for me as I believed I was quite lucky. I’m now 19 (nearly 20) and a university student. However I’m  in debt and it’s not student debt it’s debt from gambling, I have maxed out my overdrafts and my credit card and it’s around a total of £4000 all together which I know may not be as much as other people owe but it is still taking a toll on my everyday life and mental health.

I haven’t told anyone about my problem, a couple of my best mates know that I gamble and have told me that they think it’s getting bad when they’ve seen me lose £30 in a day but they don’t know that I’d go home and end up losing another £200+ the same night.

I mostly feel ashamed and that I can’t tell anyone around me even though I know they’d all be supportive and try to help me but I just feel embarrassed. I’m lucky that my parents are very kindly paying for my university tuition I also had a healthy stocks and shares portfolio but I have now rinsed that down to £0 through gambling deposits and emergency money at university for groceries because I’d spent everything else on gambling. I’ve been given a good start in life and I feel like I’ve just thrown it away. I want to restart and build up my savings but i don’t even know where to start and it feels like such a waste that any money I earn is just going to clear debts because of my stupid decisions. It’s also very difficult to get any work in my uni city especially with so many other students looking for jobs and work hours and lectures conflicting.

this is my first message on here and it would be great if anyone has any advice or is in a similar situation and would like to talk about it but mostly I just wanted ti get it off my chest and I know it’s only an online chat but it still feels better.
