Hi,

I am at my wits end. I have lost hundreds of thousands of pounds to b*****r. I self excluded myself some years but reopened an ac a few years ago. In those years I have lost over 500,000 pounds. At no time did b*****r step in and query my gambling, on the contrary they gave me free bets when I had no funds. Does this qualify as a failure of duty of care? I have ruined mine and the lives of those I care deepest about. Everything is a mess. Do I stand any chance of gaining some funds back from b*****r? Either legally or through an act of goodwill.

the biggest problem is that I am keeping everything secret and absolutely nobody knows what I am going through. I can't tell my girlfriend as it will break her heart. I am tired of going to bed stressed every night trying to get through the next day without anyone finding out about my problems

I know what you mean, one of the bookies continually offer me free bets and I get a message when I use a different payment method but that is all they do. Surely more has to be done to monitor problem gambling. I kept it a secret for 4 years and this week have opened up so far to my partner and her mother, both have been supportive and the relief although difficult opening up about it has been immense. My double life has been exposed and it feels such a weight has been lifted. I'm going to tell my mom later if I have the courage, I am scared of her reaction but know it has to be done to continue my recovery. Does anyone know about your gambling? Is there anyone you would consider telling?

Hi Daithi

I am a recovering CG.

I am going to be blunt here. Please don't take exception to what I am posting, this is just the way I see things at the moment with you. Ignore me if you like, it is your choice.

The only person ruining your life is you.

Whether or not you were gambling with company X,Y,or Z is irrelevant. If company X had barred you or limited you in some way, I am sure that you would have gone on to the next company to gamble.

You have to face up to the fact that your gambling is the cause of the problem, not the companies that provide the opportunity to gamble.

You are understandably stressed over the situation you are in. Probably the best thing I can suggest at the moment is a Gamcare counsellor. Get some sound advice and support. GA can help you with the gambling side and support ongoing.

Your partner will find out eventually. It is best if you get it all out in the open. I can't tell you what the response will be. A lot of partners are very supportive. Some relationships are destroyed. Either way,the sooner you tell your girlfriend, the sooner you can both get on with the rest of your lives.

Best wishes
