Hi it's my first time posting here.
I've never really told my story before.
Started probably like everyone else in my early teens. Seeing my mates go into bookies when we were under the legal age. Yet somehow used to always get in . Never really had a problem untill recently. And it has been hell for the past 6 months.
My choice are the infamous fobt machines. I have gone 2 months without using them in the last 6 months howeever I always seem to end up back there playing the stupid things. Im heavily in debt , at least 10k
Every time I get paid I blow the whole lot on the machines. Feel like I'm stuck in this vicious circle and just cannot get myself out.
Want to apologise for my writing in advance. I've just blown my months wages yet again and just sitting here in the car, thinjking how am I going to explain to the misses I havent got any money left yet again. Just looking for some word of advice. Someone that has been there and done it.
Thanks for reading.
Go home, tell her everything. Start from a position of honesty and you will never need to lie about your gambling ever again to her. Hand over financial control to her. Self exclude from the shops. Put blocking software on all your devices. Most importantly take the help that is available to you. Gamblers Anonymous meetings. Professsional Counselling. If you want change, then you must begin to do things you have never done.
Hi roman and welcome to the forum. My names Alan and I'm a compulsive gambler . Like you my problem was with the Fobt's and I've also lost many thousand on the effing things !. My last spin was over 60 days ago now and I couldn't be happier to have my life back again . Take the advice posted by day@atime and put all the blocks in place , def start at the bookies if thats where your playing them ?, it only takes a couple of photos and a few minutes of your time to self exclude .
Its helped me no end , as it takes the high street bookies out of the equation !.
You'll hear people on the site talk of the Money, time, location triangle and if you remove one the triangle is broken and you cant gamble ! [It Works] !!!. You know as well as I , that you can never beat the machines , we try for so long thinking about the £500 jackpot from one number ? But even when that occasionally happens what do we do ? Something good ? buy something nice for our loved ones or the house ? . No we dont !! , we feed it straight back into the demon machine , its not money , its just ammunition to keep feeding our addiction !!.
The best advice I can give as someone who knows exactly what your going through , is stop chasing whats gone !, let it go and move on with your life !.
As hard as that is , its the only way forward . It's only money , that money given time can be earned and repaid but at least you wont be adding to the debt you already have .
In finally accepting my loss , Ive allowed myself to once again live the life I choose and not the one that gambling dictates me to have !.
Be honest to those you love and hold dear , better that you tell them now , than they find out through other means , I promise it will make your recovery more likely to succeed, and you will have empowered yourself and remove a great weight from your shoulders ...
Good luck with your recovery my friend , keep posting and take one day at a time , little steps !!!
Alan who will not gamble today !!!............
Thanks day@atime and Alan for your comments. The hardest thing I find is to let go of the losses. Yet your right even if I win, I would just put the whole lot back. It's funny how I'll think twice about buying something, yet I can blow thousends in one day. I always say one more time, wishing for that one big win that could take care of all my problems. But it never comes.
Me again , You say youre looking for the big win but it never comes ! The most youre gonna win from a Fobt is £500 in one hit? question 1 How many times have you hit that on a regular basis ?
Question 2 Is that small amount gonna make a difference and be life changing ?
You know the answers , we cant win because we cant stop , its a cycle of win, lose , chase and it wont stop until you break the cycle , forget the losses and stop chasing them .
You and I have gambled for a long time, were not rich but the bookies are !!. Questions all answered ? Regards Alan
I know forgetting my losses would be a good start.
And I do agree no amount will never be enough as I would just put it all back in.
I've always wanted to attend a ga meeting. Just always make excuses why I shouldn't go but I think now is the time. Thanks Alan. You said you have been gambling free for 60 days , I hope I can come back here in 60 days and say the same.
I'll be there Buddy ! , right along side you, as you continue your journey of recovery ! , coz there's no way I'm going back to to all that sh.t again my friend ......
All the best for now Alan
