I'm new to the forum and really don't know where to turn or what to do anymore.

I've always enjoyed a bet but over the past year it's got out of hand and I don't know how I'll ever recover. I have a partner who I'm due to marry next year and a young son too, and I am petrified that I will lose them both if I tell her about my problem and the debts I've racked up (approx £35k).

I'm now at such a low point that I've considered taking my own life, but don't feel that's a viable option as I would simply leave those I love to pick up the pieces of the mess I've created.

Last year I had everything and now I have nothing. I can't eat, can't sleep and my work is suffering. I don't know where to turn.

Hi eejit

My familt is right any thoughts such as suicidal ones need to be carefully considered and looked at, you are obviously feeling very low at the moment and like alot of people at one stage or another you have lost track of whats important.

Mate i urge you with everything i am to tell your partner, i was terrified of telling my wife and hid it from her for years, but it does come out eventually- it just has to. i told her when she backed me into a corner about a credit card i had opened to consolidate some debt. She was unbelievably understanding, there was alot of tears but she stood by me- we put rules and conditions in place and now are going from strength to strength. If you cant say it to her write her a letter and explain whats been going on or even direct her to this site and give her your login details.

As for the money im afraid mate you have to just let it go, its gone. I lost double what you have and will be paying it off for a long time.

Gambling is a terrible addiction that takes so much and gives nothing back but you are not a bad person, it will hurt for a long time but trust me when i say this! It does get better! it gets easier- you will never be as low as you are now!

Shoulders back head up- you can do this

All the best pal and good luck!

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You've turned to the right place for help and guidance on your options.

Self-excluding, blocking software or handing over financial control to someone you trust are all good barriers to put in place to help you stop gambling and take stock of your situation without causing any more financial hardship.

StepChange are used by many people to help manage their debt.

GamCare offer free counselling, there's a helpline to further assist you with advice from debts to helping you stop gambling - calls are taken by trained advisors.

There's netline and a chatroom available every night. Tonight the chatroom is open from 8pm-9pm. Usually a good bunch of regulars there, let me know if you're interested in the chatroom tonight, if so I'll change my plans/bedtime to make sure I'm there to guarantee you a hearty welcome.

People here understand and want to help you.

Read the diaries here. There are people here going through similar and people who have got through similar. Read, gain inspiration and learn from others.

Telling your partner before you marry is very difficult but better let her know before you're married. It'll be a constant weight to carry on your mind and be much better if she finds out from you.

Take some positive steps, put blocks in place, call StepChange and look into counselling, CBT, GA. If you tell your partner you can then show her what you're doing about it.

This is a serious addiction that requires serious action.

It's not easy, I know about the bumps in the road but put the hard work in and you can get the life you want out.

Best wishes

Glint

Hi and welcome. I could of written this post myself some 6 year's back. Albeit I was 42k in the hole. And the added extras of just losing my job. I was also due to get married in the spring of the following year. Credit cards maxed out. Loans with multiple banks. And an overdraft that was hitting me for 250 pounds a month in fee's. I lived on borrowed time. Red letter's were coming thick and fast. Did I wait for the inevitable or decide to show my weakness on my terms?
I opted for the latter. I didn't want to go into marriage on a lie. I gave her the option to walk away.
Thankfully she didn't we got married the next year.
She was actually the opposite to the reaction I feared I was going to get. My debts were put into an iva. I'm not going to lie its a pain stacking process. But today I haven't got any debt. Although I have my ups and downs with gambaling I vowed to never borrow money again. And I haven't.
I think you like I did need to realise your in over your head.
Come clean to your partner
And start looking at your recovery options.
I wish you all the best
And most of all welcome
