I'm new to the forum, though I had initially signed up a while back. I'm a 36 year compulsive gambler that has been trying to quit for years. My problem at the minute is fobts. I'm getting married this week and I've lost all the cash gifts we've received. I also took out a loan to cover it, but obviously lost that too. Needless to say my fiancГ© doesn't know any of this. I've self excluded from about 30 bookies where I live, unfortunately I've continued to gamble regularly in the most local ones unchallenged. I've reported 6 of them for this. I know it's my own doing, but I need protected. I'm sure nothing much will happen about it anyway.
I don't know how to stop, and I hate the thought having this disease for the rest of my life.
Hi ric my husband gambled our money for our wedding, lied to me. I didn't find out until about 4 years later. He'd been bailed out by his father who had the greatest pleasure in telling me how stupid I was. Please don't hide it, get help, tell her. Lying is controlling. It will come out soon enough if all the 'gifts' of money have gone. Hand over finance, get to a GA meeting. If you get help now it won't ruin your life.
Hi Ric,
Sorry to hear what you have been going through. As you will see on here, you are not alone and must of us on here will have been through the same or similar.
So far the ways you have been trying to stop are not working so maybe its time to start looking at trying something different.
As MRG has said honesty would be a good place to start. Opening up and telling someone may feel scary but I promise you it will feel like a massive weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Would you want your future wife to be honest with you if it was the opposite way round?
Give yourself the best chance of stopping by getting some support. Call gamcare and arrange some counselling…or even better find a local GA meeting and get yourself along there. You need to make the effort required to stop, whatever that may be.
I wish you the best.
