Hi

This is my first time on here. Im a bit nervous and I dont know what to expect.... Another night with no sleep again last night. I went into the betting shop to play the roulette machine again, I lost the money in my pocket and went back to the cash point 3 times until I maxed out! Again I did it and again I had that sick feeling, my heart was beating a million miles per hour!! Ive had enough... i need to stop but I just dont know how!! Im 34 and this has been going on for 15 years! Lying, sleepingless nights, mood swings. How do I stop, where do I begin? I wish I never started on those roulette machines!!!

Thank you

Chris

Welcome to recovery Guys 🙂 You beat this with barriers & support from anywhere you can get it (here, GA, GP, friends & family) - One Day At A Time!

Firstly you need to get your gambling triangle broken (Time-Money-Location) as removing just one stops you being able to gamble, then you figure out what tools you want to use & give recovery the same attention as you gave gambling.

My last ditch attempt @ getting rich from gambling was via the FOBT's @ the bookies having progressesd from maxing out my cash withdrawals on my card to using my Mum's (I look after her finances as she is a CG) & then simply Internet banking every last penny into my account & handing my card over until I was so far past my authorised overdraft that the bank said 'enough'. We cannot win because we cannot stop! I self excluded (you need mug shots of some description) & handed over my finances to my OH then stopped carrying a debit card (you can get the cash facility taken off of some credit cards).

Stopping is easy, it's staying stopped that will give you your life back - ODAAT

Hi Chris , and Gaz , My names Alan and 67 days ago was like you guys !.

Same problem with me , I couldn't stop betting on the Fobt's or Fixed odds betting terminals.

I've lost many thousands over quite a few years , as have many others on this site .

My advice is simple . Stop !!. You will never beat them, they are programmed to win money for the bookies !.

Look at what you and I did, you spin upto £100 every few seconds? And for what ? , hoping that you get 1 number up with maximum stake and win at best £500 ?.

What happens then? You carry on spinning the wheel , because you think your luck has changed but it hasn't and you end up losing the lot and thats when the trips to the cashpoint start , which is conveniently located right next door .

You draw out more and more money , until youv'e blown another £500 trying to win back what youv'e just lost .

Am I right ?

And that cycle of lose, win, chase , lose goes on and on !.

We are compulsive gamblers , we cannot win because we cannot stop !!.

If you really want to stop ? you need to do just that !.

You have to break the Time , money , location triangle , take one away and you can't bet !.

You have to self exclude from as many bookies as possible , it takes 2 photos and about 15 minuets of your time , if you bet online then use blocking software so that you cant access the gaming sites . Avoid carrying a debit card or cash whenever you don't need to .

All the advice , is available on this site for you to check out in your own time guys, or you could give the gamcare advisors a ring , you should find that really helpfull !.

But the biggest thin your gonna need is a bucketfull of willpower, coz without that It's not gonna mean jack !

You can put as many barriers in place as you want but without really wanting to stop , you will always find a way to gamble !.

I've not had a bet for 67 days now and have never been happier !, my life's been turned around again, my finances are better and most importantly I'm not lying to anyone anymore . The thing thats let me move on more than anything else, was to let go of the losses , its gone , it's not coming back and I'm sure as hell not gonna chase it anymore !!.

I wish you all the best with your recovery from this terrible addiction , remember your not alone , so keep posting aboiut how your getting on !. Alan .............. Compulsive gambler , who will not gamble today!!!!!!

Alan 135 is spot on, great reply. I would like to add that putting the barriers in place are a great help for thinking time. Go and self exclude, get a cash card account, i have a cash card only with a maximum withdrawal of 100 pounds per day so the damage is limited if i slipped up.

That feeling when you're chasing your losses is awful, that's when you're in the zone, it's when you have one thing only on your mind and nobody can stop you. Anyone get's in your way and god help them, it's a terrible place to be.

Be normal, don't gamble.

Chris, I feel for you pal. I'm been there done that but don't have the t shirt as had to hand that to the bookies as well. Emotional nightmare. Day 56 for me and I can't lie... it's tough. Get as many barriers in place as you can as you will want to gamble and your only hope is that you can't. Limiting card withdrawals is essential in my opinion.

Same here used my debit and credit cards and maxed them out.

New to this form - really ashamed as have been addicted for 20+ years.

Got to get a handle on this nonsense.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the advice! I've set up a basic book account where I have no cards to take money out of the cash point. In going to put all my money/wages in there and only leave the bare minimum in my current account. That will cut of one part of the triangle you guys mentioned! Thanks again!..... 3 days no gambling!

30 days no gambling!!! I had a mates birthday on Saturday and guess what it was in a casino bar!! I went there with £150 and I left my bank cards at home. I had a lot to drink and I was watching my friends play roulette which is what has been taking over my life the last 15 years! I didn't play I single game, not one bet!! I think I've finally given up. I'm feeling positive at the moment and I'm taking each day as it comes. 30 days no gambling! Time to make it 31.
