I wrote my first ever poem tonight after another day of losing and wasting all my money... I hope it will help to start my recovery...

Mind Prison

My mind is a prison there is no way out

My thoughts are the guards, self criticising, negative and full or doubt

Work is my free time, a short period of restspite...

Yet deep down I know there is no end in sight,

I am unable to break the shackles of my mental chains...

And everyday I question do I deserve these pains,

My crime is my weakness my desire for more in life...

I guess this is the same for real criminals that led to their strife,

So where does it end my life sentence?

And is this now the time for my repentance,

Maybe it's karma or perhaps God will..

Are these the reasons I'm struck with this ill?

Sometimes I wish for the death penalty...

At this moment in time I would go voluntarily,

To die would be a relief for me...

But this would murder my family,

So for now I go on, I find a way...

To survive this life day by day.

Hi Jonny,

And welcome to the site, good entrance ! Read through some of the people's stories on here they are an eye opener that you are certainly not on your own with this illness, take comfort in the fact that there are people on here that were in a very low place and have picked themselves up, I have only been on here a few days, and in that short time I have had some great advice and support, you have taken the first step coming on here given time your strength will grow to battle this, speak to people on the live chat also, believe me this time a few days ago I was in a very dark, lonely and unhappy place, today I feel stronger and more determined than ever to put this right, we all make mistakes in life no body is perfect.

Stay strong, and focus on tomorrow not yesterday

Heather

Hi Jonny, echo Heather's welcome to the site but more than that, welcome to recovery 🙂

You are not the 1st person to come here wishing for death but suicide is definitely not the answer! Addiction would have us believe it is our only friend, that there is no way out but addiction is a liar. It promises us riches yet takes everything we have to offer, including our souls. It may feel like greed is driving you but chances are there are other things going on in your life which lead to the negativity & self doubt that plagues you. Like being busy @ work, gambling is an escape from your pain. My friend Ade2 told me, we're not bad people, we just took a wrong turn, he was right. He also said recovery is possible & that is right too.

Recovery gives us our control back & teaches us how to manage our lives saying no to addiction One Day At A Time. What have you tried so far? GamCare offer free counselling as does your GP who may also offer to medicate if you are having these black thoughts but no medicine can fix us. Committing to a GA programme might be something that you could consider? What have you tried? What is your poison?

I enjoyed your poem & look forward to hearing more from you. Time to stop surviving & start living - ODAAT

Hello Jonny,

Well done on sharing your creativity here, with your poetic first post.

As forum members have suggested, as well as continuing to post here, you could talk with your GP if you're feeling depressed, and also the Samaritans if you're having suicidal feelings. The Samaritans freephone number is 116 123.

http://www.samaritans.org/how-we-can-help-you/contact-us/about-the-call?gclid=CPeV64_rrc8CFUa6Gwod0m8OKA

You're welcome to call us on 0808 8020 133 if you'd like to find out about free counselling services near you. You could have the support of a therapist locally, to help you find your way towards recovery from your gambling problem.

Using our forum, you will see stories of recovery, which may inspire you with more hope that change is possible.

Take care,

Forum Admin.
