Not sure if this counts as a success story but here i go. I am hoping this is the date i will look back on years from now and be proud. After work today i went to the only bookies in my town, where all my gambling was done and presented a letter and photo for self exclusion. The owner was there and said that they "Will try there best". Doesnt exactly fill me with confidance. However one of the younger girls who works there followed me out and said she will talk to all of the staff personally to make sure none of them accept my bets if i should go in. It has been a horrible few years but hoping that ive finally turned a cornor.

Hi

Its a proud day and you should be feeling that pride.

They have a role not to let you in but you have to discuss with your monitoring group whether you are likely to try and break exclusions.

Do you think you are likely to try and get in or go to another place? This will be a test for you  but get your money protected and have other blocks like your father knowing and making sure you cant risk your savings

The recovery journey is for a lifetime but you start to turn that into a very positive statement.

Focus on what it has done to you. You should be associating gambling with pure pain and misery. What are you ever going to miss? Seriously?! Did you want all that pain again because gambling is a drug addiction and a mugs game. You need to talk things through and do the exercises of talking about your gambling sessions to a non gambler.

I hope you can talk to your family about it. The key is openness honesty and talking about your feelings.

I have never written a success story but I am strong and confident. If you get the foundations right you have little to worry about as you heal.

Best wishes from everyone on the forum

Hi,

Welcome to the  Gamcare forum, I am really glad you have joined and are reaching out for support. I hope you find connecting with the other members here helpful.

You should be very proud of your actions todays, self-exclusion is one aspect of a gambling recovery, there is lots of value in the peer support you will receive on the forum/chat room and 1-1 support.

I  would encourage you to contact us on our helpline on 0808 8020 133 or on Netline at https://www.gamcare.org.uk/get-support/talk-to-us-now/,   to speak one to one with an advisor, who can offer support and talk you through various options that can help. We are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so there is always someone that you can talk to.

Warm regards,

Helen
