Hello all

I am new and this is my first forum. Im not working i have had plenty of problems depression e.c but finally after about 3 years i am getting well again abd hopeing to start a career in health and fitness only to start gambling again after about 3 years, i stopped as i had major mental health problems and the last thing that was on my mind was to gamble, anyway without going on... I played roulette at bookies just before christmas and lost £600 in about 30 minutes, luckily i had quite a lot of money for christmas so i just about got my bills paid 'rent/mobile/water/elictric/dog food and felt very releaved only to do it again about 1 month ago after finally getting my money back on track, once again lost £600 over two days, i dident touch my bank for atleast one month And was just about to scrape in the bills again and then i loose £120 today which has left my bank balance on £300 and my bills come to £400 on the 10th of march so i wont have enough, roulette is so bad and i think it should be illegal,it can take £1000's within minutes, although some bills will get paid and i might even manage to somehow get through it im afraid it will just happen again and i will finally not be able to pay my rent and what will i do with nowhere to live i have a dog also where would we go??? My serious problem with gambling is i can have injoyment with betting £10 but as soon as i start loosing loads i chase my money back and could lose all that i have be it £100 or £100000. It makes me feel suicidle because i cannot control it, i could have bought so many clothes with that money and food but now i have nothing but sorro and grief

Hi Darren118

Youve come to the right place. You must completely stop gambling and I think you know that.

Is there anybody close that you can talk to? There is no shame in reaching out for help. Other people can help you put the blocks on and put self exclusion orders in place.

I know the feeling of scraping through and I just about managed to pay my bills. I am ashamed to admit I was doing this with the bank of mum and dad. They were informed a good while ago that I have a problem and the blocks are now in place.

Please ring gamcare amd keep posting your thoughts on the forum.

There is a way of stopping but you will not do it with willpower alone. You need help.

It is also depression related. I had been pushing the self destruct button all my life because I have always had some form of depression.

I feel so much better gambling free. Gambling is never the answer and you have shown all the signs of compulsive or out of control gambling. Its not fun because its a losing game and the first bets will only make you chase. Its a form of mind control but I wont discuss that now.

So please ring gamcare. Some counselling and a visit to the doctor will be more than helpful.

I wish you all the best

Hi joydivider thanks for your post, i havent really got anybody to speak to, my family have other problems to deal with and just tell me that i should have learnt my lesson before but its not that easy when i get caught up in the moment, i can go from loosing £5 to £1000 in 30 minutes if i could get hold of that money i.e payday loans, at ny worst 3 years ago i used to loose a weeks wages in 1 hour then take out loans to try and win my money back, very bad choice! But i get caught up in the monent and nothing else goes through my mind but to get the money back or go home feeling guilt and down, the only way i can stop the guilt and pain is to win it back and go home with relief yet that hardly never happens!

Hi Darren this is a great place to get help and support and lots of advice. You should give gamcare support line a ring and talk to them. Read people's stories on here there are lots of people who have been in your position and have had success in overcoming this addiction. You have really answered all your own questions about what could happen in your future if you don't stop gambling so you know you have to do something about it now. It doesn't make people rich and it doesn't make people happy. It is an awful addiction that messes with people's minds. It's time to try your hardest and give yourself a gamble free future. Make that call to gamcare this morning. -wcid

Thank you all very much for your support, forum admin i have contacted you and i am currently waiting to have counceling, yet gambling can ruin peoples lives for ever or a very long time just by having a 1 bad day getting sucked into the addiction, i could go months without gambling but the day i do gambling i could loose a years wourth of money if i had it,i am quite good with money, i could save for ages only to spend it all without 1 hour on the roullete! I wish they were banned!! Hi LossSole999 how can you get a cash only account? I guess just cut up my bank card? That could be a good idea, i dont see the point in self excluding from a bookies because there are about 10 bookies in the same street! So i would just go to another one, and half the time they wouldent even know your banned as there are different people working each day,its too easy to gamble i wish they had better exclusions in place say ban myself from all bookies nationwide! Simple, wouldent be able todo it then

A negative thought creeping in there Darren118. Walk in with pride and say I dont want to gamble in here any more. Get some photographs. You dont have to look your best and just get in that booth. The photographs are £5 for five. Its the best fiver I have ever spent! Tell a lot of staff. make yourself known that you are not to gamble in there.

Lets just say there wasnt a full rack of info for identity theft. I may have gambled but Im not totally stupid. My name and my picture are basically what they need. I do not forget Im handing it to the gambling industry who are not my favourite people to put it mildly

The owners are living the high life on your money. Look at it for what it is...a losing game...look at what it has done to you! Is that the sign of something worth bothering with? You have been doing something very harmful while ignoring the odds. Its driven by mind control, escapism and chemical highs in the brain. Just like an alchoholic or drug user does something harmful while ignoring the risks.

You need to focus and keep focusing that you are handing money to them. Yes the onus is on you to stay out but they will have your picture and are unlikely to pay any winnings = no point. Do you think you would try and break an exclusion order? If so discuss that with gamcare and on the forum.

It was enough for me. I would die of shame walking back in those places. I havent even tried to go anywhere else because after a second of thought I know I would lose my hard come by money.

As others have said its effective blocks you need...cash only savings accounts and someone managing your finances.

Its a deadly serious dangerous addiction. I spent 10 months after joining gamcare thinking I could do it with willpower. I couldnt! When I started blocking properly It worked. There are no half measures.

This must be coupled with a chat with the doctor and any counselling you can get

Best wishes

You can ask the bank too give you a card that wont let you do transactions in bookies or online ,only let you lift cash from machines and you can also as for a limit put on withdrawals .Be upfront with them ,there are lots and lots of people like us that need help.

You need to realise now that you are a compulsive gambler and will be for life .Put blocks in place ,even if it takes 10 visits to bookies self exclude yourself if u can. YOU can fight this addiction Darren ,its a fight for me every single day ... all day just now. Im hoping i will get better . Say too yourself every morning "today i will not Gamble" .

Dear Darren

Hope you are feeling a bit stronger today. You've had some great advice and support on here, and I just wanted to add to what joydivider and lostsoul suggest about self exclusion. You can now self exclude from more than one betting shop in your area by calling a single helpline number 0800 294 2060.

If you're looking for any more support, do contact us on the Helpline or Netline - our contact details are at the top of the page.

Take care,

Hello forum admin, yes iv had some great advice, much apreciated to all that posted, i am working on the advice given. Regarding your last post i thought self exclusion was for online accounts, so if i phoned that number and said i want to self exclude from all coral bookies in hampshire would this work? I thought you have to self exclude at each single individual shop hence why i have never had the time to do such a thing. If that is correct that could be very helpful!

Hi Darren,

The new self - exclusion scheme is for land based betting shops locally, not nationwide. Maybe give it a try to check what they mean by "local area". It is a brand new scheme which has only just gone live, so talk it through with them directly on 0800 294 2060. http://self-exclusion.co.uk/

I hope this helps.

Kind wishes

Gabriele

Hello Darren

I had the same problem needed to self exclude myself to all the

bookies near me and it was just something I couldn't do! Would take forever,

but the number gamcare has given you is really good.. They track all the bookies in the area what are close to u and you email them a up to date picture of yourself they do the rest. That's it.

Defo worth it, will take 20mins of your time and will be done in 1 go.
