Morning everyone. I am female, in my 30's for reference.

My entire life I have had a complete and utter love for books. I love reading, I love books, doesn't matter what it is I just think they are fascinating. Someone puts their life work into a book that you can buy for such a small amount.  I love pre-loved books, new books, I just think they are great. I particularly love self help books, like self development, I am always keen to grow and be better.

Gambling took a lot away from me with my reading; I found I just couldn't concentrate on or digest the information because my mind was just so busy. But I want to get back into my reading.

I was thinking about starting a thread in a book club style - it will hold me accountable for reading and finishing a book! and I can post my thoughts on each chapter each day (or every few days depending on how busy I have been) in here?

You can actively join me or you can just follow along for the journey. I don't necessarily want my books to be focused just on gambling, because we are so much more than that and this addiction does not define who we are.

I think I might go back to my roots, of where my belief in universal power started, which was when I was much younger and my mum handed me a copy of 'the secret' by Rhonda Byrne. Some people find this book repetitive, and it is, but it's the foundation of the universal laws, and it's an easy simple read. I like to go back to this book when I have lost my path a bit.

I am really excited about this!! I have ALWAYS wanted to do a book club, because I don't know if you've guessed it from this post yet, but I LOVE BOOKS! 🙂 I will start tomorrow, when I retrieve my copy of the secret that I borrowed to a friend!

Hi Hopeful

This sounds like an excellent idea and well done for suggesting it.

Although it's not really a book club suggestion, have you read Bill Ws story from the big book of AA. It's the book.used for the 12 steps and I'm sure you can get a pdf online. I urge you to read the 16 pages, I found it mind blowing and read the word alcohol as simply addiction.

Love this!!

Books have been a huge part of my recovery. Love going to Tesco and picking up cheap or free books in the book exchange. Any opportunity for a free book, I’m all over it!!

Whats everyone’s favourite book? Mine is a classic. The count of monte christo. 1000 pages, but it’s amazing. Highly recommend.

Would love to hear everyone else’s.

Gambling stopped me reading. Instead I would stay up all night spinning my wages away. Now I stay up all night reading. So much more peaceful, although my inability to put the book down doesn’t help my sleep!!

Anyone starting out on their recovery, reading is an excellent way of keeping your mind occupied and away from the urges.

Love the book club idea. Will be checking in daily

Stay strong 💪

This is embarrassing but my favourite book is from many years ago and I can't wait to see it on the cinema

So pleased people think this is a good idea. I am going to start with 'the power' by Rhonda Byrne - as I really want to get started tomorrow and my friend currently has my book 'the secret' which I was going to start with. The power basically covers the same things anyway, but it has a few more examples in, addition to I feel like 'the power' is a great tone for us to set, that we are taking back our power over this addiction!

Stuart I literally just sent those books to a friend yesterday for her birthday as she went to watch the movie for her birthday treat!

I don't know if I have a favourite book, there are that many that have had such an impact on me! I am excited to actually be able to have the headspace to read again. Looking forward to this, I guess I will just find my groove with it, but I will try and read a chapter (or a few chapters) a day, and post a summary and my thoughts with it, then people can do the same, either through reading along, or just by reading the summaries I post and sharing any insights they have taken! 🙂

Has anyone read Elidor as a child. Loved that book.

Also, if anyone reads Bill Ws would love to hear anyone's thoughts on it
