I use to sing this to a FOBT, then i realised they were cheating me ;-(
The song 'No More Talk' by Dubstar always gives me a spring in my step: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BpMDjdm3iU
Talking is useless when your cards have all been shown
I'll make you feel bitter and I'll never use the phone
'Cause I'm not the kind of person soft enough to cry
I'm not the kind of person to hide when I can fight
So breakout now let the feelings out and take the blame away
And leave the past for another day
Please no more talk today
'Cause I'm not the kind of person to hang around
I'm not the kind of person to sympathise with self indulgence
Breakout now let the feelings out and take the blame away
And leave the past for another day
Please no more talk today
Talking is stupid now my interest has flown
I'll make you feel useless if you call me on the phone
Breakout now let the feelings out and take the blame away
And leave the past for another day
Please no more talk today
There are also three lines in the George Michael song 'Cowboys and Angels' that give me hope:
Please be stronger than your past
The future may still give you a chance
The future, the future, not the past
Zara Larsson... one for the lads...
And this one's for everyone who says we'll never amount to nothing
The Streets have got me through a lot of s**t. I believe Mike Skinner fought through some gambling demons; it does come across in his songs ("Not addicted" was about footie betting!).
"Edge of a Cliff" saved my life. Too much to put here but a story about a chap thinking of ending it all...
"then a gentleman stopped / and said something I never forgot. /
For billions of years since the outset of time / every single one of your ancestors survived. / every single person on your mum and dads side / successfully looked after and passed on to you life..."
Lock the locks is my 'go to' track when I need a kick up the b*m as well;
"I smoked one two many cigarettes / I told one too many lies. / I gambled on too many bets / I lost it all to this life."
And when I need a little motivation booster they did a b-side called "where my heart has been".
All three of those tunes resonate massively with me.
Kev the album you're talking of
Is a grand don't come for free
Which was a story about his gambaling addiction.
It starts with him placing multiple football bets that won. On his way to put on the last bet of the night the one for a grand. He finds the place closed. Only for him to find out the bet would of lost.
Hence song number 2 lucky man I believe. The whole album is a play and if you listen to the whole album it's actually all one event about a week of his life I believe
The album was genius
And very good

Not quite Dean but close. The album is a story but it's more about his relationship with a girl than the gambling stuff.
The track "Not addicted" is just a single story, not the theme throughout the album - Skinner wants to stick £20 on a football match (despite knowing nothing about footie betting - sounds like me!) for "blues to thrash the reds". Can't make it to the bookies for the start of the match, blues are 2-0 up at half time and he thinks about dumping all his money on a mid-match bet for them to win. He doesn't, and "reds" score three goals in the second half - lucky escape.
So glad I was stranded back at the flat
Wincing at every goal we let em have
The question I now have to ask
Is how the **** did we get smashed that bad?
I just very, very nearly, nearly
Lost every penny of all my cash
There is absolutely no mention of him placing any other bets leading up to that one match, but there are more gambling references in the third album "The hardest way to make an easy living".
I'll stand corrected I knew it was among them line's
Top album
On the subject of The Streets....Stay Positive from his first album is another go to track when my spirits are low.
I came across this post this evening as I am back on here after having a big slip recently and have been reading lots of diaries but not posting. This inspired me and got me listening to some music so I decided to contribute.
my song is Hold on by Wilson Phillips. I'm not able to add the link but the lyrics are as follws:
i know this pain, why do you lock yourself up in this chains.
no one can change your life except for you, don't ever let someone step all over you.
Open your heart and your mind, is it really fair to feel this way inside.
Someday, somebody's going to make you want to turn around and say goodbye. Until then baby, are you going to let them hold you down and make you cry.
Don't you know, if you change, things will go your way, if you hold on for one more day.Hold on for one more day.
You can sustain, or are you comfortable with the pain.
You've got no one to blame for your unhappiness, you got yourself into your own mess. Let your worries past you by, don't you think it's worth your time to change your mind.
I find ins this song uplifting and makes me want to work hard on recovery. The song when related to gambling explains exactly how it is and by acknowledging the lyrics it definitely sends the message home to me. Hope it does for others too.
