Hi all,

im looking for some advice from anyone who has had a similar experience.

i am a gambling addict and have been for years but have lied to myself that i can control it and manage the addiction.

i had never gambled on credit cards but relied on them to pay for things once I had inevitably lost my wage packet meaning I was in debt. This debt was becoming unmanageable and I confided in a close family member who agreed to move some of my credit card debt onto 0% cards in their name because I promised I would not let her down and I honestly believed that.

I have been signed to Gamstop for a while so could not use uk gambling sites and that was helping until I found illegal sites.

In the space of 1 month I realised these sites existed, realised I could load money on from credit cards and maxed out all of the cards that my family member had moved debts from for me to (what she thought was) help me.

I will soon be in a position (when my next statements come out. That I am not in a position to pay my credit card, loans, and overdraft debt and know I will have to seek financial assistance.

but I also know that my family member cannot afford to pay the debt I owe and that I need to pay her back as much as I can before I begin to pay off the debt in my name.

I am thinking of not paying any of my debt back and just giving my family member most of my wage for a couple of months and then putting in place a plan with my creditors to pay them back but I will still need to pay my family member some money back per month to ensure my addiction is not their burden.

any advice or thoughts on this would be really welcome

Thanks for reading

Hello Dav123,

Thank you for creating your first post on the Forum

You have done well to sign up to GamStop and reach out for support here. Please do consider installing a software blocker alongside your GamStop to block gambling operator websites from outside of the UK: Blocking software - GamCare

With regards to how to pay back who and when. It sounds like you are a caring person and trying to minimise the impact on your kind family member. You may benefit from reaching out to either StepChange StepChange Debt Charity. Free Expert Debt Help & Advice or The National Debtline Free Debt Advice and Support | National Debtline to talk to someone about options of arranging your debt.

Hopefully you will receive some insightful and supportive peer comments soon.

Best Wishes,

Louise
