Sharing Access for Banking Apps with Parents

Hi there,

I have recently come clean about my gambling problem to my partner and parents.

My partner is still considering whether she still wants to be with me so my parents will be taking control of my money.

I am passing my Barclays debit card to them and removing the banking app from my phone and installing it one of their devices.

For everyday spending I want to use my Monzo account, I propose receiving a small amount weekly for that.

I want my parents to have access to the banking app aswell as me but that is proving difficult as it can only be logged onto at one device at a time.

I wanted Monzo as thought the notifications would give them peace of mind and can see the gambling block still active on the account. If it was my partner could set up a joint account but don’t want to do that with my parents.

Want to feel like I have a small amount of control, but I guess if there isn’t a suitable solution I will have to lose access to this account too

Does anyone that has been in a similar position have any advice or tips on this?

Thanks in advance

Monzo account sounds good..... i have transferred all my money after bills to my dad for six years..... i still have a debit card with an overdraft..... but ive got all the blocks for online...... then i try to not take my debit card out if possible just cash....... but after a few years things slip and you take ur card with u for ease of use.... but online is sorted..... then i only have 500 pounds in current account and the rest in dads account..... then all i can lose is that...... so far ive been almost 1000 days since i last gambled and its going great.....

Monzo account does sound like a great extra barrier might try that myself...

all the best adam

Have you considered an account with Starling? I appreciate setting up a new account might not be ideal, but I currently use starling and my friend has the app on their phone also so has constant access to my account. There doesn’t seem to be any issues with us both being logged into it at the same time. It’s very similar to monzo (which I used to use) in the sense that it sends a notification whenever you make any kind of purchase/transfer so my both my friend and I will get a notification whenever anything changes on the account which has been a massive help/deferent for me!

It starts on this basis TB1.....you will feel a huge relief and even serenity that someone is helping you

You don't need more than a small allowance in your hands as money is no good to you until you heal

You can set up any normal account that will take fast transfers from an account your parents have. Fast transfers come in same day I believe so it's all easy to do

You will learn to be calm and not fidgety with money....you will enjoy providing receipts say for a shirt they transferred the money for or they will assume you have been gambling

You will learn to be calm and not constantly phoning them because you want stuff right now. You will make your allowance last and take pride in providing financial reports to them

You don't need their trust at the moment or any time soon...believe me...however you do need their love and understanding that you have been ill and have an addiction.

Any large transactions like rent should be done by your parents or they stand in the bank with you as you do the bill payment on screen.

If you think any of this is awkward or being treated like a baby you have much to learn about an addiction which kills people to be blunt.

These measures will save your life as you do the cold turkey and start healing

You will prepare for the big statement that for the rest of your life you can never be complacent about being gamble free

Best wishes from everyone on the forum

Thanks everyone for your responses and advice, it’s much appreciated.

@cerrry93 that specific advice on the app is exactly what I needed. You’re right it is a pain setting up a new account but atleast one that will work for me and my situation. Will get that sorted asap 🙂

Goodluck to all
