Hi PA

I really appreciate your kind words on my diary and the fact you have read it and maybe taken something from it. Your personal determination screams out in your posts so that, coupled with your plans for a gamble free future will have you succeed I am sure of it.

Some advice though, put the stick away. There is no point in beating yourself up any longer, what's done is done and a part of your past. This illness debilitates us and over rides our natural way of thinking. It gives us hope for a better life when the reality is it will destroy our lives if we let it. The only way to beat it is not answer the call for our first bet.

Put the past in a box, don't forget about it as it is a part of you. However the pride in never betting again, outweighs the shame we feel when gambling. Life is to be lived, enjoyed and embraced. You can NEVER win if you gamble. Each day you don't gamble is a day richer financilally and emotionally.

Good luck and as I said be positive and proud that your fighting this battle but don't consume yourself with guilt and rage that you lost yourself to it previously.

Stay strong

Matt

Hi PA,

sorry to hear that you have had a relapse. I was wondering if it would be helpful for you not to channel all your focus into the debt repayment because that can sometimes be counter productive. The more you keep looking at the debt, the more it will keep nagging you, and because it is not a quick fix it contains the danger of wanting a win to pay it off quicker.

Have you thought about looking at your relationship with money in general? Are you good at spending money on yourself (as in buying stuff or spending on experiences instead of gambling)? Do you feel you deserve to have money?

I am also wondering if you have had some time to be kind to yourself lately? It sounds like you don't feel like you desreve kindness, but the more you just soldier on without giving yourself opportunity to relax and reflect, to be kind to yourself, the more your self-flagellation will take its toll eventually.

Please feel free to use the Helpline or the Netline as well if you feel a chat would be helfpul.

All the best,

Eva

Positive Action, You haven't failed. Stick in there and get back in the ring. I think most people on here would say that it's all part of the process. I lapsed 40 days ago and the clouds are shifting now.

Best wishes to you.

Morning Positive action, hope you are ok. New day, new beginning, fresh resolve, fresh ideas and the opportunity to come at it with a different perspective.

Addiction and the after effects of gambling can leave us totally demoralised and quite wretched. It is the nature of the beast and sadly it can become the norm. Our lives can become a destructive cycle which revolves around remorse, regret, resolve and relapsing

I believe Eva has raised an important issue regarding worries and the preoccupation with debt. Ideally you need to make your debt repayments and than put financial thoughts out of your mind. I know this is easier said than done but it would allow you to focus more on positive aspects of your recovery. Take care...stephen
