Hi Anthony here enough is enough so after a bad night last night losing £7000 in matter of minutes and then a chat with Samaritans who told me about this site I need to do something about my addiction.I have been a gambler on an off for number of years probably going back 10 years starting with poker and then getting online casino roulette and slots, over past 2/3 years it has gotten pretty bad with big wins and even bigger losses never kept a track of how much I’ve lost but it must be around £50000 which is about 50% of my savings so I’m not in debt but need to do something before I am .I have no one to speak to about it family abroad live with my girlfriend who has no idea how bad it is and I can’t admit it to her so here I am .

Hi Anthony, what do you mean by you don’t know what to do? If you need real-time support would it be worth phoning the Samaritans again as they’re more instant than the message board

Hi Anthony,

Glad you have come on here. Have you registered with Gamstop? It’s an online blocking site so that you can’t log on to most sites. This has helped me it doesn’t get to the route of the problem but puts a block in the way whilst you get the support that is needed.

Like slick said ring the Samaritans again if needed.

Just take one day at a time

CJ

Take brucey -b advice if youre serious about wanting to stop. Remember wanting to stop and wanting to stop losing are not the same thing. Took me years of misery and pain to recognise that. Wish you well mate and hope youre commited to stop gambling.

Hi Anthony, I wish you the best of luck in your recovery. 7K is certainly a big loss, but it's not the end of the world for you if you're able to stop now.

In terms of not getting a fast enough response, this forum isn't overly active. It's not unusual not to get a response for at least a good number of hours, if at all, so maybe your expectations should be lowered in terms of what support can be offered here. You can use other Gamcare support systems as well, such as live chat and you can call them up. It will depend on your own experience how worthwhile this is, but just making you aware of the other options open to you.

Finally, your addiction does sound bad, but you mention that 50K is 50% of your savings, presumably meaning you have another 50K left over. If you read through other posts on here, there are people with 50K worth of debt, not savings, so people might not be as inclined to respond right away to someone who appears financially okay. I'm not belittling your own problems. I'm just trying to give you reasons as to why you didn't have people responding immediately.

Best of luck!

Hi Anthony, just wanted to stop by and suggest you start a recovery diary and record step by step how it’s going for you.

Reading some success stories and other threads also really help me in the lonely tempting times. I'm by no means an expert either but you do need to just write off that money, see it as a lesson learned. Sign with gamstop and then take one day at a time! Good Luck!

Hi Anthony,

First thing is to register for GAMSTOP, I’ve lost a similar amount to you but have no saving now. You are in a position of no debt so don’t believe you have reached rock bottom as you can still pay bills etc - this is why I think you need to get Blocks in now to stop you losing the other 50k...believe me you will if you don’t put blocks in and hand over those savings. If you have money you will spend it on this horrible habit. Think yourself lucky that you have the chance to get out. I’ve got money in my account now, and if I was honest I am tempted to chase my loss after 40 days of no gambling but i know once I start I won’t stop until lose it all - whether I win or not...I’ll end up putting it back. GAMSTOP has taken the immediate temptation away from me. Do it , you won’t regret it if you really want to stop.

good luck

You are in a full tilt, times like this after a big loss there is nothing you can do other than buckle down and limit access to your money until things get a bit better. I can see your mind is all over the place and is probably buzzing and overactive.

You can talk on the phone to a helpline maybe, it does help to talk to someone about it.

Restrict access to cash. Whether that is give your cards to a friend, family, takes one temptation and you'll lose another 7k.

Hi Anthony , personally I would stop everything including the syndicate, it’s a difficult position sometimes as you may feel like your letting the group down but it will hopefully help you in the long run ! However every one has there own way of dealing with this addiction and although I might not be the best person to give advice it would be something I’d stop , good luck
