Hi all, 

Hope you are well and staying strong but it's ok if you're not. 

I've been wondering if anyone has had experience or knowledge around locking your credit availability any how this works please? I relapsed around a month ago and found myself in about half of the debt I had racked up the first time. 

I'd love to have that peace of mind that any damage I could ever do would be limited and less damaging, I've signed up to the vulnerability service for finance and also locked my credit report on Experian (Lenders can then not see your report and SHOULD decline any attempts) 

Any advice or other ideas would be great, thank you

Hi,

 

I am in a similar position with debt. I have signed up to a debt management plan with StepChange. They freeze all interest on your balances and you pay one monthly affordable fee. 

 

If you dont want to be allowed to take out credit, being in a debt management plan indirectly stops you and makes your finances more manageable and structured. Slowly but surely (and affordably) you can clear your debt without major impact on your life.

 

However, it will ruin your credit score if you wanted to remortgage/get a mortgage/rent a property etc. So it would depend on your short/mid term plans

I manage all my outstanding debit with each company direct and have payment plans in place.  Due to my credit score I will never get a mortgage again but that is not a personal issue for me.  The companies can also provide breathing space for up to 2 months, with no payment until you have sorted your self out.  The really IMPORTANT issue is to ensure all your rent/mortgage, utility bills, income tax payments, council tax are all up to date. Citizens advice can also give you guidance.
