Gambling Misery

Hi All,

I would love to say this is my first attempt at a diary here but sadly it is not and I have found myself again having zero money after riding a gambling train which was always destined to end in misery.

I have now been gambling for 12 years and have lost a ridiculous amount of money in the process.

A while back I self excluded from every web site I had used, I thought I had hit rock bottom and was determined to stop. I had borrowed thousands in pay day loans and was chasing my losses and spiralling out of control for the umpteenth time. I woke up briefly and set up payment arrangements with all the companies and this month I will have got the pay day loan monkey off my back.

Sadly in this time I somehow managed to find a route back in with a new company and started playing a bit here and there. Well on Saturday I hit another low, I managed to gamble away another 6000 pounds of borrowed money in a crazy 2 hours. I feel awful. I immediately self excluded and today I have booked myself in for Hypnotherapy, I am desperate to remove this gambling demon from my brain, it has destroyed my life since 2002 and I just want to put it to bed and start saving money and live life normally.

I am 34 now and I feel like my life has been wasted and I am totally deflated.

Sorry for the negative post, I just need to get this out in writing and maybe get some helpful replies.

Thanks

Matt

Matt

Hi ya matt.. Welcome to the forum. I have found that self excluding is quite a positive course of action as it makes you understand that you cant gamble even if you wanted to. I have been going around the bookies this morning and self excluding from the shops. While i think this will work for me i think that if you are reading peoples posts you shouldn't follow them but use to tailor your road to recovery. Good luck on your journey!

Hi

You just have to keep trying. It is a horrible disease but I do think you have to look at gambing as a disease. If you look at it that way then maybe you can set yourself up better during clean time so that you can fight it. This site and others like it are the place to be but the fight is never ending.

I totally agree with the disease part. It really is and it has thus far destroyed who I am. I know it is never too late to be the person I should always have been but this disease has eaten into my life, my finances and my happiness.

I have to kick it I know that now.

Hi matt, you can beat this.

What I find helps me is thinking about triangle theory that someone once told me.

Time /money /location

Take one of these out and becomes impossible to gamble.

I was online too.

I find what helps me on top of blockers is I have no bank cards, just get pocket money frm wife. Also my bank account has block on any online transactions.

So basically it would be very hard for me to gamble.

Hope this helps, wish you all the best.

Thanks for that. That is good advice. The money thing though is tricky I need bank cards and have no wife to police me!

I am going to hypnotherapy on Thursday, hoping that helps to take some urges away.

This is the start of day 3 gamble free.

Hi Matt. Day 6 for me today. Get rid of your debit/credit card and have a cash only card. I have this an can transfer money on my online banking but I cannot use it on any websites. I have unfortuently found other ways to gambling ie through opening accounts in other people's names and using paypal etc. however, if you have the right blockers in the way we can eventually beat this disease for good. Wish you all the best. Ange x

Writing to report a sorry failure. I gambled again on Sunday that was supposed to be day 8. I lost 500 in one bet on a horse that I read a tip on.

I am back to day one after self excluding from the new web site I found. This disease is horrific. I have to beat it somehow.

Hi Matt, have a good look around this site, there is some great advice, have a look at a lot of threads, there is a lot of sense, have a look at what I suggested to sam 'g' on new members forum. Don't get into debt mate , that will be awful.
