Went to watch the paint dry at Old Trafford yesterday with teenage son. It was an underwhelming match but great fun to spend loads of lad an dad time. Pleased that what goes on tour stays on tour in the fact that the match and journey were book ended by Macdonalds and Subway but what the hell.

anyway, on the way home the radio was filled with discussions about the roll over on the lottery. My son asked what we would do if we won. I explained that I didn't do the lottery any more and was a little shocked when he asked why - he didn't class the lottery as gambling (he knows of my plight). The next person on the radio was a doctor of statistics or something as went in the explain that if you put 759 kg of rice in a bath and wrote winner on one grain, then the odds of winning the jackpot were the same as picking that one grain of rice whilst wearing a blindfold. My boy then stated, "it doesn't matter anyway as i would never do the lottery as i think that choosing numbers once woudl mean I would need to play every week just in case they ever came up" . I was quite worried / thankful to hear this as it implies he believes that once he starts he may not be able to stop! Does he share my compulsive tendencies and if so how can I help him manage them at an early(ish) age?

Just wanted to post this as a reminder to me that my boy is a sensible lad and already sees a potential downside of starting - I need to ensure that I help him to continue to develop his logical thinking!

Today will be a great day - I hope it is for you too.

Thanks HL, that's why I told him early on, he has seen what it can do and hopefully he is stronger for it.

Interesting day with one particular thread taking my attention. I have believed from day 1 that the individual concerned wasn't ready to stop and even posted that on his thread.. I am just a bit concerned that I seem to have taken an almost morbid interest in his challenge. Is it my nature that I can't resist reading about a particular persons constant challenges.? Is it that I see a journey that so easily could have been my own? Why is that despite announcing my absolute annoyance that it all seems like a joke that I continue wait on the next post? I feel confused as to why I feel like a rubbernecker looking at a car crash?

Busy day at work tomorrow so hopefully my mind will be taken away from all things gambling and I will be able to get back to normal.

Wishing everyone a great day and continued recovery!

Hi ab,

It was us when we were active, same behaviours, but you are well into your recovery now, remember that it's ok to look as long as we don't stare, your recovery comes first, and with 224 days under your belt, I'd say you are doing amazing.

Keep strong and positive

I'm out arm have a beer but have not read you diary in full but all seems good and I will read it when I get home

Took me a while but I've sobered up now. I have read bits and pieces here and there but you can't beat reading from start to finish in one sitting

What a great read and inspiring journey. we are so very similar in the recovery paths we have chosen you are more or less double the abstinence whilst I'm on my own journey I feel like I'm walking In Your shoes halve the time ago if that makes sense. (I'm not a stalker)

I wish you all the success and will always be happy to be 50% behind you

Hi Sb

it's difficult having that mirror of our former self's being held up to gaze at sometimes isn't it?

All is clearer now. The diary in question reflects what may have happened had I not admitted addiction and committed to recovery. My interest is in that it strengthens my resolve in that I would never want to be in that position and I have to make the right choices to make sure I don't. In a way it what my "ghost of Christmas future" may have looked like.

Today is going to be a great day, I hope it is for you too.

Yup, I too have followed it with morbid curiosity, it was me too...B.R. (before recovery)! I imagine I will continue to read & may even whoop with joy if the writer commits to recovery but until then, I will refrain from posting!

It sure turned out nice again...Today IS going to be a good day!

Hey folks,

I have read the diary too. I see a Toad fighting and winning. I see a Toad climbing this mountain bit by bit. I see a believer. I see the ambition. I see a proud Toad.

Never stop believing.

Toad.

I don't wish to tarnish my diary with detracting posts but I think the above post must be about a different diary to the one I refer to.

Away on business at the moment and looking forward to getting home later and attending GA tonight. This CG still uses every avenue possible to ensure continued recovery!

Today will be a great day as I choose not to gamble.

Everyday day is a great day, when we make that right choice my friend, it's just sooo good to wake up without that devastating hangover feeling:))))

Enjoy the freedom of recovery
