Hi All
I wanted to put a topic up because I would love to hear any ideas from other people. I'm a little nervous about posting it as I don't know how people will take it.Â
When I started in recovery I was reading the Just for today pages. They all seemed ok to me apart from one. "Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out; if anybody knows of it, it will not count; I will...."
So I struggled with this and tried to think what I could do. One of the obvious things was that in action I would discard cigarette butts so I started picking them up and putting them in the bin when I found one. I thought that the owners of the house where I dropped it in front of wouldn't like it there but wouldn't know I picked it up as it was mine.
When people were talking about giving service I thought they meant in church. I was wrong so I started to give service at my meetings by reading the literature out loud at the start, sharing and became the literature secretary.Â
I started to realise that I needed to give service to myself and look after my well being in recovery, be of service to my family and finally be present for them, and on top of that, if I'm not giving service to my.community then who is.Â
The other day I was on the train and there were two bottles of beer in the aisle. It's not a big thing but I picked them up and walked to the bin. Got back to my seat and noticed a bottle cap on the seat so did the same, without even thinking. I now go into the supermarket and go and take a photo of what the local food bank needs. Doesn't cost a lot and I can surely afford to buy a few items and pop them in. If I don't who will.
I'm going to order a litter picker. I do a lot of walking so it's no harm to take a black sack and pick up any litter I see on the streets.
I was talking to someone the other day who, every so often will walk around less fortunate parts of his town and leave a one pound coin on 5 different dustbins or walls for people to find.
Any other ideas anyone else has ?
