Hi all. I'm new here and have a major issue with fobts whatever category they fall into.

I have on numerous occasions contacted my m.P and even had a positive response in 2019 from the gambling commission agreeing with me and offering to implement my idea but it's still not happened.

So my "idea" is....

Stop these machines taking cash. Make them accessable to a card only. The card has to be issued by the person whose premises the fobt is in.

In bookmakers, it would have a photo I d and you would have to load money onto it at the counter or via an app etc. You could set daily or weekly limits and be able to have cooling off period or self exclude.

In pubs and service stations etc, a temporary card could be introduced but the same limits could be obtained so you could set a limit and once reached could not use the card again hence limitations are in place unlike throwing cash into it and it would also eradicate under age gambling as i.d proof would have to be shown to obtain the card. If a person has already self excluded it would show up and no card should be offered.

I'm sure there will be ways round this for those desperate to lose more and feed their addiction but stronger rules could be enforced as these become more transparent but at least it would stop the cash cycle and give a person a bit of time to think before adding funds to the card plus you could ask your bank to stop gambling transactions (Barclays do this) so I'm sure this would help people.

I enjoy betting on horses and football but have to self exclude myself from the bookie because I would be drawn to okay on the fobt. If I needed card to okay it,I would be excluded so wouldn't be able to obtain one hence, place a bet on my sport of choice,go home and enjoy it.

Something needs to be done. Many bookies now have loyalty cards that can be used on the fobts so this should be easy enough to introduce.

I think that we are becoming more and more aware of mental health issues and therefor this should be taught to the next generations in school. CBT and mindfulness should be in the curriculum and we need to be given better tools to understand how we work as human beings. That would save the NHS millions if not billions of pounds.

Best

I had asked the bank to freeze gambling transactions but I manage to still use the account to gamble so imo although it’s my fault because of my gambling issues banks need to held accountable for allowing things to happen like this.

@adam87 banks are a law unto themselves mostly but I did find Barclays helpful blocking online gambling transactions

I had this same thought many many years ago as i struggled once id excluded via moses, gamstop and sense to still not go and lose money in the bookies im so called excluded from....... i dont think anything will be done as taking cash is a huge way of making money from the vulnerable and bookmaking companies arent ethical......

all the best adam

Yes that would be a step in the right direction but they are not doing it.

The problem is that it all comes under the heading of a legal activity so there is no willingness to upset the status quo

The government don't care....the banks are failing in their responsibilities...ie they dont really care either which is strange as a person could end up with an overdraft or mortgage that can't be paid. It's more understandable when you see that the banks make and create money from debt.....they are not really into promoting goody two shoes behaviour

The gambling sector is a monumental scam and scandal......the government don't care because its a massive cash cow.

So if the government and banks don't care....why would the gambling dens care a jot?

There is little to no effective protection

Also problem gamblers are addicted and ill....Cash was my anonymity to fuel my illness. As an addict I didn't want things changing or any protection which is where it gets complex.....as I was mentally ill with it

As a recovering addict I want change but I don't see active gamblers wanting change so we are even disagreeing  between those two groups......and so it all continues ruining lives!

The bill for so called problem gamblers is way way less than the tax revenue so of course they are doing nothing solid

We often make the mistake of feeling the government care about us as individuals.....they don't which is sad but realistic......they care when there is a swell of opinion which hurts them and their pockets.

@joydivider could not agree more with you regards the government. I've had contact with Carolyn Harris in the past as she appears to be on the side of people with gambling issues. She was very friendly to start with and asked if one of her "friends" from the observer could contact me to discuss these things. I agreed but never did receive the call. Since then, despite numerous emails, she's totally ignored me. I'm guessing if it doesn't get her name in the spotlight, she's uninterested!

I will update on here once my m.P Sir Bill Wiggin has received a response from the gambling commission who agreed with this idea of a card system in 2019 but have never implemented it. If it's allowed I would copy and paste on here now?

All the best
