Hi everyone,

Welcome to the Forum’s new topic!

This week’s topic is “distance”.

“Distance” can come up in recovery journeys in different ways. We can often talk about creating distance from things that might lead to relapse, or that might cause further harm. For example, things like self-exclusions or different ways to manage our money ( https://www.gamcare.org.uk/self-help/managing-your-money/ ). We also can think about “distance” in terms of how far we have come in our story.

From your own experience….

How have you created “distance” from gambling harms?

How would you recommend others to start creating that distance?

Are there any things that are now different for you in your life, that shows how far you’ve come in your journey?

We would love to hear your reflections below!

Evening Lulu and forum

Thought I would add my view on what distance meant for me as a loved one affected by gambling harm.

Distance meant a few things for me. Firstly , removing myself from enabling my loved one to gamble by not  paying off loans and debtors. It is a hard not to rescue but in real terms you are not helping as you are actually making their next loan easier.

Distance also meant for myself to put some space in to allow myself to reach out for help and advice for me from Gamcare and other charities. It all meant I was in a better place to support again.

That distance created hope for the future and as long as there are people and charities all fighting for a gambling harm world, then that hope is real.

Take care all of you out there for now.

Patsy
