Key Aspects of Reverse Psychology with Addiction:
  • Paradoxical Intervention: Instead of begging an addict to stop, a loved one might ironically suggest they keep going, aiming to make them rebel against their own addictive behavior.
  • The "Stop Enabling" Approach: This is the most common form of reverse psychology in addiction. When loved ones stop solving problems caused by the addiction (e.g., giving money, making excuses), the addict is forced to confront the harsh reality of their situation, which may create a desire to change.
  • Mirroring: Repeating an addict's excuses back to them to show the flaws or absurdity of their reasoning, often leading them to question their own justification for using.
  • Challenging: Using phrases like "prove me wrong" or "I don't think you can do it" to trigger a defiant need to prove their capability of sobriety, particularly effective with defiant or rebellious personalities.

Hey @tazman, I think i used the vast majority of that list, without even noticing.

But the biggest thing I used was just palin old support, my wife is now 1 year gamble free and she definitely would t have got there without my support.
