Well, I’m new here

my gambling issues started around 3 years ago and like most on here spiralled in to an addiction .

the extent of my gambling led me to be 2000 in my overdraft and £4K on a credit card. Which may seem low to some but it was huge to me. I was lucky enough to work hard in my job and pay off the 4 grand.

things have improved, my credit card is now gone, my overdraft is now gone. I only have a credit card which I use normally which has 200 on it.

even though my debt is much better and I’m no longer In my overdraft.. I still gamble. Over the past few weeks I’ve gambled £1000 total. But I could afford to.. but it doesn’t mean that’s ok. I do stop for weeks but I always go back..

Hello Louise

Sounds very similar to me.
what do you gamble on?
is it on your own and do you hide it?
why do you do it?

I’ve gambled thousands over a period of time but always worked hard so it’s never been noticeable to others, all those things I could have had but don’t because I’ve gambled it away.

It can give you a huge instant rush and seem enjoyable, but is it really worth loosing all that money. Think of the items you could have, you could travel the world, do things and see things, have a goal whether it’s to save for a house deposit or a nice holiday. The thought of your bank account building with no risk of losing it, it’s a rewarding feeling.

Keep strong now and no more gambling, I know you enjoy it but your life could be a lot better without it

xx

Hi louise

Welcome to the site, thanks for sharing your story.

Have you thought about getting any blocks in place ? That could help you prevent turning back to it.

If you gamble online there is  a website called gamstop you can register and it self excludes you from gambling online. Take a look at their website

Theres also Gamban which you can get for free through gamcare it prevent you being able to access gambling websites.

If you gamble at bookeis or casinos you can also self exclude.

You can also ask you bank if they can block all gambling transactions as many banks now offer this resource.

Welcome to the site i hope you find it valuable and supportive

Loulou x

Hi you said last few weeks you spent a  grand and you can afford it..pretty soon that will be 2 grand, then back to overdraft and credit cards and then spiralling downwards till you have nothing but a massive pile of debts and big issues. Think of what you achieved when you stopped. There's only one outcome if you continue. The sites will get richer and you will be in despair. Please think carefully before you press any buttons.

Regards Chezzy

@louise2676 My question is a simple one. Do you want to stop gambling or control your gambling?

Chris.

you are totally right. I’m in a good place money wise at the moment. Overdraft gone credit cards nearly gone. It would be so easy to destroy that now and gamble it all within a few weeks

Of course I’d love it to just gamble £20 once a month and be done but as an addict can that be possible?

We sound similar.

at one point I was using credit cards though. 4 grand on one card from gambling. £200 on another. 2k in my overdraft that’s 6 grand of debt on gambling. I managed to turn it around pay off the credit card snc overdraft.. I’m in the green but I’ve still gambled a lot and like you spent thousands and that could have been holidays and experiences and stuff
